Volvo to add XC30?

12/27/2007, 4:21 PM

By Drew Johnson

Volvo will build a new crossover vehicle based on its C30 hatchback, a new report finds. The new CUV — which will likely be named the XC30 — will have five doors and use an all-wheel drive system. The Swedish automaker recently announced that it would produce a five-door version of its C30.

The expansion of the 30 line of vehicles is also believed to eventually displace the S40 sedan. The S40 will merge with the S60, creating one mid-size sedan. No V series wagon is expected for the 60 lineup as the V70 already fills that niche. However, an XC60 is expected to bow in the coming years.

The larger XC90 CUV was reported to be canceled earlier this year, a report later refuted by Volvo.

I guess it will not be “C” but “V” as wagon. However, they do sell V50 based on S40 which is about the size of S60. Ford screwed their logic completely. We probably will not get it anyway.

Ford and Volvo producst are so intertwined it would be a shame to sell Volvo now. Im not sold on their present marketing plan and lineup, not to mention the recent announcement to cut dealers back does not give one confidence. New XC looks good, love the style of the new c30. Quality is good, safety record is impeccable and they make a great cold climate car. Having said that they need a little help in performance and interior style area.

Ford has screwed up Volvo’s alphabet soup naming scheme completely. In a perfect world, there should either be XC30/XC60/XC90 or XC50/XC70/XC90.. but now it looks like they will have XC30/XC60/XC70/XC90. Now that the S80 has begat the new V70, I expect the S40/V50 replacements to be named S60/V50. Will the 5-door C30 be the next S40, or perhaps a V20? Who knows..

I can wait to see the new Swedish C30 Touring car in action. I bet Volvo brings over the E85 C30 variant.

I disagree. Quantum physics is confusing. Volvo is Ovlov spelled backwards.

The S40 is actually a very decent vehicle that’s priced competitively. Though with the difference of $800 for a fully loaded S40 T5 AWD compared with a fully loaded G35x, only those looking to save $ on gas would choose the volvo. I guess they want to stay out of that competition and jump to the crossover craze directly.

Every time Volvo builds a new car, someone falls asleep at the wheel and nails a telephone pole.
