Volvo to cut upwards of 3,000 jobs

10/08/2008, 8:34 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Volvo announced today that it is looking to cut about 3,300 jobs, about 13 percent of its global workforce, as a result of diminished demand for the Swedish automaker’s vehicles. Volvo says that about 2,000 of those will be blue collar jobs and 700 will be at Volvo’s corporate headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The rest of the jobs will come from Volvo’s world-wide operations, including about 700 contracted consultants. The automaker employs about 25,000 people globally.

This latest round of layoffs only adds to the last cuts announced in September. Overall, Volvo looks to lay off about 6,000 workers, or about one quarter of its workforce.

What was it they used to say: the average 70 year old Swede was in better shape than the average 40 year old North American? That’s the problem. There aren’t enough of us who live long enough to reach the age demographic of Volvo’s target audience.

If you sell less cars you need less people, pretty simple concept. Im sure every automaker will be tightening up after this year.
