Volvo has announced that it will be recalling 8,438 2010 XC60 SUVs over an issue discovered during crash testing. Volvo says the issue involves the potential for the driver’s seatbelt to become detached from the seat frame during a side impact crash.
Although no incidents have been reported to date by owners of the new XC60, Volvo and the NHTSA have confirmed the problem during crash testing in a lab environment and have released the recall accordingly.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration released a report on the problem and said, “The driver’s seat side cover panel (seat control panel) in certain driver-side impacts may release the attachment of the seatbelt to the seat frame.” The NHTSA report also said, “Should this condition occur in a crash, the seatbelt may fail to properly restrain the occupants, increasing the risk of injury.”
The recall calls for Volvo dealers to modify the inside of the driver-side cover panel to eliminate the potential for an unintended release of the seatbelt restraint.
The recall is scheduled to begin on December 15, 2009.

When Benz bought Chrysler, Chrysler’s car scored higher on reliability meter then Benz’s. I wonder if history repeats itself between Geely and Volvo’s reputation for safety.

How crazy, I saw this car for the first time three days ago, it was the 3.0 turbo, I was driving home in my Speed3 and the guy in the Volvo quickly goes to the side of me and starts revving his engine after having a long day all I was focused on was getting home, but ya, looks like a very interesting vehicle.

Even the mighty Volvo can be subject to “safety recalls”…at least it wasn’t sudden acceleration.

Volvo, your safety conscious buyers aren’t going like this! Hell, even non-safety conscious buyers expect seatbelts that work!

First and foremost, Volvo is still the safest automobile on earth. Fortunately, the authority has identified the problem first before it has happened to the real life. To my best knowledge, before a Volvo car is developed and released to the consumer, the manufacturer will crash test the prototypes in different angles including the front; the rear and sides. The factory has crash-tested over 500 prototypes each year. The recent recall could be something just happened as some problems happened to the extreme quality control Shuttle Space Ship in the past.
Overall, we have two 1994 Volvo in our family and are enjoying it. Volvo is still by far the safeties vehicle, their seats is the most comfortable available and the vehicles are built for reliable and longevity.
