Comments on: Volvo to show high-efficiency C30

While at an auto show, THIS CAR (not a diesel on display, however) got the greatest positive crowd looks of any, I noted at the time. I got to meet and speak with some lovely swedish ladies. It appears they actually fly their booth babes over from Sweden, and they are well-versed in their cars, so not the typical rent-a-spokesbabe that others have. Nice touch, and makes me want to go to Sweden.

Anyway, I think it will be a great car, but they are positioning it like the MINI, but I don’t see it. It’s a nice car with its own niche.

frankhoffy, I second that though 99.9% of the people here would shoot you down for saying anything performance related to Volvo. As for the C30, it looks good on the pics but when you see it in person the back seemed a bit edgy, somehow reminds me of the Volvo of old. I really wanted to like it but couldn’t.

Take it from a Volvo enthusiast who has driven pretty much every model in their lineup. Volvo doesn’t make slow cars. Even their base model S40 has plenty of pep.

I think it’s kinda cute, but 106 HP sure doesn’t sound like it’s enough to move it with any kind of authority. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s a slow car, and this one sounds like it’s going to be a real dog. LOTS of cars could probably get 56 MPG if you choked ‘em down enough, but then they’d be so slow nobody would buy them.

But who knows—maybe Volvo knows something that I don’t.

The aerodynamics could be applied to the S40 and V50, especially that solid front ‘grille’ and wheel mesh. Hopefully this gearbox will migrate over to Ford and Mazda.
As far as pricing, they’re shooting for the Audi A3, Mini, and other premium hatches. So low $20K to start, under $30K with options.
