While Volvo had little to show at the Detroit Auto Show other than its new R-design trim level, the Swedish automaker has bigger plans for the Geneva show in March. At that show, Volvo will officially unveil its XC60 crossover vehicle — a direct answer to Acura’s RDX, BMW ’s X3 and Infiniti’s EX 35.
Motivation for the XC60 remains unknown, but sources indicate that the 3.2L inline-six from the S80 is a likely candidate. Volvo’s inline-five also remains a possibility, but whatever the case, the small CUV will be available in front or all-wheel drive.
The XC60 is expected to hit European showrooms in late 2008, with U.S. sales beginning in early 2009.
The XC60 concept made its debut at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show.
