Polestar 1 receives 6,000 pre-orders
With original plans limited to 500 units annually, the company is considering adding a second shift to its Chengdu, China, factory.
Volvo's Polestar division has apparently received 6,000 pre-orders for the Polestar 1.
The 2+2 grand tourer is the newly-minted brand's inaugural model, positioned as a high-performance halo car with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Speaking to Autoweek at the Geneva Motor Show, Polestar chief Thomas Ingenlath said the company is already considering changes to its production schedule to keep up with strong demand. The initial plan called for building just 500 units annually, which would take more than a decade if the initial interest proves an accurate forecast of actual sales.
The company is still accepting deposits to gain a more accurate projection of likely sales, presumably viewing the 6,000-unit figure with a bit of skepticism. It is likely that at least some of the pre-orders have been submitted by profiteers hoping to get an early spot in line, following through with the sale only if the car's secondary-market value exceeds retail prices.
"You can get yourself into a hell of a problem if you're overly optimistic," Ingenlath said.
The company will add a second shift to the Polestar 1 line at its upcoming factory in Chengdu, China, to accommodate strong demand as the car enters production next year.
