Votes are in, new Alfa hatchback to be named Furiosa

11/21/2007, 9:51 AM

By Drew Johnson

Earlier this year, Alfa Romeo announced that it would let the public vote — or at least the public living in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Japan and the UK — for the name of its upcoming 147 replacement car. The contest ended on the 15th and Alfa Romeo has since tallied all votes and just announced the winning name — Furiosa.

12 names in total were up for vote, including Agea, Enos, Everson, Fira, Milo, Mod, Nevo, Solea, Sparvo, Velvetta and Ventura.

The diversion from a numeric naming system is also an indication of things to come from Alfa Romeo. The Italian automaker announced earlier this year that it would make the switch to individual names to give its cars an air of excitement and passion.

The new Furiosa is expected to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

I can obviously see why they chose furiosa.

I really like it! But then again, I’m a big fan of alpha designs, so maybe there’s a bias there.

Fira was a better name

Alfa also states that it still has the right to change the name whenever it wants. I’m kinda curious whether this thing will get RWD already.

Most importantly, it’s getting a name instead of some generic alphanumeric pseudocode. I’d swear some builders should just start giving their cars Social Security Numbers.
Furiosa is a good name. It embodies everything Italian: redblooded, spirited, never boring. Velvetta would have been one of those cross-cultural goofs like the Chevy Nova in Spanish countries (No va = doesn’t go)

global_lightning: you’re dead on. I truly wish more automakers would give their vehicles names again. The only alphanumeric designation on a vehicles exterior should be the license plate or something telling you what’s under the hood.

On the flip side, if you trust manufacturers to bestow decent names upon their products, you end up with things like “Tiguan”, “B9 Tribeca”, and “Durango”.

Ventura would have been interesting. First thing that came to mind was the Pontiac clone of the Chevy Nova.

All I’m waiting for is a head to head comparo between this car and the GTI. And I can’t wait for some magazine to come up with the smart ass title:

The Fast and the Furiosa.

I would have gone for Sparvo because its the only one that doesn’t sound like “anus” or derived from a word like ‘fire’ or ‘furious’ or otherwise sounds completely ridiculous.

Lame name, sounds a nick name for a wife when she is on a bithing tyraid. I they missed a big opportunity. They could have named it velveeta and followed up a 2nd model w/cheez-wiz. I know what the best selling color would have been.

CA36: not only was that funny, but it captured the attitude of a generation!

johnnyc: “V6″ decals should be outlawed, or tarrifed at $75M per unit.

The only exception to names should be anything in Spanish. ‘Ranchero’, ‘El Camino’, ‘Vega’, ‘Durango’, ‘Cordoba’, ‘Comet Caliente’, ‘Fiesta’ ‘Pajero/Montero’…

JJT, agreed. I can’t stand badges like “V6″ and “biturbo” and “supercharged” and “3.5L” blah, blah, blah…why not just print the entire window sticker on the back of the car??

Alfa bucks the trend and give NAME to their cars! I always wonder how using letters and numbers that make no sense convey “luxury?”

even LLN gets it wrong, this is not a replacement for the 147, that is a larger hatch, this will be a mini, audi A1 rival.
