VW announces entry-level Scirocco for UK market

10/06/2008, 8:53 AM

By Andrew Ganz

After recently launching the Scirocco hatchback, which revives a classic Volkswagen name and basic style, the VW is making the vehicle more accessible to a wider range of buyers. Initially launched in most markets in high-features, 2.0-liter GT form, the Scirocco will now be available with smaller 1.4-liter gas and 2.0-liter diesel engines.

UK market pricing starts at £18,790 (about £2,000 less than the GT model) and will include reasonable standard features like 17 inch alloy wheels, trip computer, air conditioning and a 6-CD changer. With the 1.4 liter gas engine, VW says the Scirocco hits 60 miles per hour in 8 seconds flat while returning 42.8 mpg on the European combined cycle. The diesel takes 9.2 seconds to hit 60 but returns up to 55.4 mpg with the manual transmission on the combined cycle.

VW still doesn’t appear to show any interest in selling the Scirocco in North America, though rumors and speculation abound.

Wow, those are some quick times. Add a passenger, a bag of groceries and a case of beer and you’ll be trolling for Subaru Justys on the highway.

@ tyler_is_aero_tt, really? I think it looks like an update of the 92-95 EG hatches, from any particular angle.

A rebadged minivan makes sense? But a sporty car with good MPG at a decent price does not? Whats next another rebadged A8? Wake up. Thumbs up for the CC and Scirroco, down for the Eos and rebadged T+C. And Up yours with the Up VW.

liked the concept better. this should have been a true sports car, but instead they golf’d the iroc into redundancy, which is why they’re afraid of bringing it here. shaver i agree about the minivan and yes, the Up is stupid, but veedub needed a convertible not named beetle, which i think most car guys consider to be a botched circumcision of an automobile. at least the Eos’s roof looks cool when it’s in action.

Please bring this to the US! Look at all the similar 90s (and even some 80s) cars farting around! Those people are bound to make more money one day and want to step up to a car with a warranty and class!
