Volkswagen has announced a new Polo trim level to split the difference between its sporty GTI model and efficient BlueMotion. Dubbed the BlueGT, the latest Polo model will arrive in European showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2012.

In order to maintain some of the sportiness of the Polo GTI, the Polo BlueGT is fitted with a 140 horsepower version of VW's 1.4L TSI engine. Although down 40 horsepower from the GTI model, the BlueGT is capable of a very respected 0-62 run of 7.9 seconds. The BlueGT tops out at 130mph.

That performance is matched with equal parts efficiency thanks to a new active cylinder management system. A first for Volkswagen - as well as the industry's first four-cylinder to feature such technology -- the cylinder deactivation system means the Polo BlueGT can achieve up to 52mpg.

The Polo BlueGT will arrive in showrooms with a starting price of 19,650 euros ($24,745).
