VW cancels European Robust plans

07/06/2008, 8:46 PM

By Drew Johnson

Although pickup truck sales in the U.S. have been well off the pace in 2008, the segment isn’t going away anytime soon, largely due to the utility a truck offers. But across the Atlantic, European buyers have several other economical utility vehicle options and much higher fuel prices, which has forced Volkswagen to cancel its European pickup truck plans.

According to Forbes, VW has officially canceled its plans to sell its upcoming Robust pickup truck in the European market. VW cited high oil prices and the lack of sufficient demand for such a capable vehicle in the European for the cancellation of its pickup truck plans.

VW will now only produce the Robust in Argentina from 2009 – original plans also called for production in Hannover in 2010 – with annual production pegged at 90,000 units.

========>>VW pickup truck: SUPER LAUGH. sounds like another Phaeton disaster. Article didn’t say if they would sell it here. This country is too brand name esque oriented. It probably wouldn’t survive here.

This is 3 day-old news LLN…get with it.

I for one would like to see VW produce a TRUE small PU with a 4cyl diesel…they’d clean up in NA if they did soon. The Rabbit PU was 30 years ahead of it’s time…

VW has several excellent diesels that would make great truck engines. Will this get the V10 TDI?

So I guess if a trucker wants Fahrvergnügen he’s gotta get an F450 Harley.
