My First car and first GTI was in 1984. 90 hp if I remember. Great Progress, and I ‘ve heard these new ones are more true to the original idea of the GTI than some other gens.

Congrats on 30 yrs!

Maybe this would be a great commuter car.

Get a load of what I found on VWVortex. In particular, those (including myself who are not a fan of the wheels. Also possibly a LSD?

Details/changes from the regular GTI include:

- body painted front and rear valances with body painted side skirts
- taillamps borrowed from the new R32
- anniversary badging
- the black 18″ wheels shown in the photos are *NOT* the actual production wheels. Rumors say we’ll see a 19″ BBS looking wheel.
- red stitching on the steering wheel
- red GTI badge on the steering wheel
- Golfball DSG shift knob (connected to a six-speed DSG unit of course)
- 230hp 2.0T FSI
- leather bolstered seats with Interlagos plaid inserts

There are several important things that have come out of this study. The German press has been reporting that Volkswagen would be bumping the horsepower of the 2.0T in the GTI and GLI to 230hp or so. We now have confirmation of that. Along with the horsepower bump there have been rumors that Volkswagen is working on a new electronic torque sensing differential to go with the additional horsepower. The electronic diff is necessary to effectively put power to the ground and is electronic so as to ensure that the differential plays nice with all the various electronic systems (ABS, ESP, ASR, etc., etc.). Volkswagen isn’t officially mentioning the differential at this point so we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed and wait and see.

The final specification of the U.S. 25th Anniversary GTI is being worked on so color choices, pricing and final features are still up in the air. We’ll of course pass along any information VW gives us as we receive it.

230hp from 2L?! That’s S2000 territory.

230hp from a turbo 2.0 car really isn’t that much. EVO’s with a turbo back exhaust and Engine Management are near 400hp at the crank. Same thing with Japanese STi’s and numerous other cars. So I hope you are joking “shut up”.

The old 1.8t’s in the GTI’s would be close to 300 foot pounds of torque at the crank, with EM alone.

The Evo’s 400 bhp 2.0 liter Turbo is really not a good everyday engine. It requires a lot of maintenance and is really finicky. It was really designed for the race course (rallying), not for college student Joe to drive around.

Anyways, the 2.0-liter DI Turbo engine from VW AG (also used in Audi’s) naturally generates 225 bhp, but they keep it detuned on purpose so they can come out with ‘special’ editions. You can always get 30 extra horse by dropping an APR chip into the car.

i think the rims are cool, and who cares about the potential of the engine. it puts out 230 bhp and thats about the end of it.

I am not a fan what they are doing here. I get the impression that there will be a regular GTI and a 30th anniversary one. If so that sucks. They should all be 30th aniversary ones or the the 30th anniversary package should just be badges. Every GTI should get the extra 30hp.

Look pretty decent, I would love to drive on. Then again…..I’m only 16 and i failed my drivers twice. But I know enough that they are great cars

I would be curious to see what these 30th AE cars are dyno’d at. The stardard GTI in stock form has been consistently measured putting out 200 hp at the the wheels (assuming aprox 15% drive line loss, that is already 230 crank hp). The 150 hp rated 1.8t engine also put out that numer at the wheels. VW has been underrating their engines for a while now, so it will be interesting to see what these cars really put out. If they keep the trend, this new one might be closer to 250-260 crank hp in reality!

Since the engine already produces 230hp they probably aren’t going to change anything except the advertised hp numbers. They wont be lying! No one is going to get on their case for underrating the GTI/GLI cars at 200hp.
