VW considering building Passat, among other models, in the U.S.

07/14/2008, 1:40 PM

By Drew Johnson

Volkswagen has yet to announce the location of its new U.S. production facility, but the latest reports indicate the German automaker is already planning to produce the next-generation Passat at its U.S. plant. In addition, VW is reportedly considering U.S. Jetta production.

The new plant is intended to help VW reach its goal of selling 1 million vehicles in the U.S. by 2018, and producing popular models like the Passat and Jetta would seem to be a logical step towards achieving that goal.

However, both vehicles will likely take on a new form when built in the U.S. VW is planning to make the next-generation Passat bigger – to take on mid-size heavyweights such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord – but will also drop its price from about $25,000 to about $20,000 – closer to the segment norm.

Conversely, the next Jetta will likely shrink a bit to better size up with vehicles like the Honda Civic. Like the Passat, the next Jetta will also see a reduction in price to bring it in line with the rest of the segment.

Automotive News
also speculates that VW is considering producing a new SUV in the U.S. The new ute would slot between the Tiguan and Touareg, and could be the rumored long-wheelbase version of the Tiguan.

VW is expected to announce the location of its U.S. plant sometime tomorrow.

2018 isn’t when they’re introducing the plant. They have a goal of selling 1,000,000 cars by the year 2018. That’s a pretty optimistic goal.

I’m tired of hearing about where they’re building a plant. Where is more info on the UP!?

They couldn’t accurately forecast the 2008 market so why do they even try 2018? It does make “current” sense to build cars here in the USA due to the dollar being down but you would have to be able to forecast financial markets better than auto sales to make that prediction in 2018.

They’d better be thinking of a bigger facility to handle 1,000,000 recalled Passats by 2018.

Jetta shrink is a good thing and add a better design and the next generations of Jetta could be a winner.

Rumors of WV concurring the world are greatly exaggerated. Of course they’d like to build cars in US: Turks in Germany work only 28 hours week.

Building the Jetta and Passat in the US would be ideal, because all the parts come from South America anyway.

Volkswagen should focus more on building cars that don’t require weekly visits to the service department.

That would be a good start.
