Following in the footsteps of BMW ’s MINI brand, Volkswagen is seriously considering launching several different variations of its updated 2011 Beetle. The current Beetle – launched in 1998 – is available as a coupe and cabriolet, but the next-generation could expand to include three new body styles.
According to ChannelI4.com, VW is currently developing speedster and roadster versions of the next Beetle, with the former likely being based on the 2005 Ragster concept.

In addition to the Speedster and Roadster body styles, VW is also said to be strongly considering an SUV variant. The Bug SUV would likely be a ‘soft-roader’ – as previewed with the 2000 Beetle Dune concept – and would go head-to-head with MINI ’s upcoming Crossman SUV.

Despite the upcoming launch of the Golf Mk6, the 2011 Beetle is expected to be based on the current Golf Mk5 platform. Look for the new bug to also borrowing some styling cues from the up! concept.

Engineering of the Beetle is currently ongoing in Germany, but its final design will be penned in California. Like the current-generation, the next-generation will be built in Mexico.
