VW considering three new variants of 2011 Beetle

06/23/2008, 11:03 AM

By Drew Johnson

Following in the footsteps of BMW’s MINI brand, Volkswagen is seriously considering launching several different variations of its updated 2011 Beetle. The current Beetle – launched in 1998 – is available as a coupe and cabriolet, but the next-generation could expand to include three new body styles.

According to ChannelI4.com, VW is currently developing speedster and roadster versions of the next Beetle, with the former likely being based on the 2005 Ragster concept.

In addition to the Speedster and Roadster body styles, VW is also said to be strongly considering an SUV variant. The Bug SUV would likely be a ‘soft-roader’ – as previewed with the 2000 Beetle Dune concept – and would go head-to-head with MINI’s upcoming Crossman SUV.

Despite the upcoming launch of the Golf Mk6, the 2011 Beetle is expected to be based on the current Golf Mk5 platform. Look for the new bug to also borrowing some styling cues from the up! concept.

Engineering of the Beetle is currently ongoing in Germany, but its final design will be penned in California. Like the current-generation, the next-generation will be built in Mexico.

Who would thought that it is such a raging success? They need 2 more failures on the same theme?

Not that I like the Beetle really but I thought that off-road Beetle concept that came out like what 9 years ago or something was really cool. I think it would be pretty cool. Also haha unless it was fast as hell, I wonder if there’d be a market for a “R” variant Beetle. I doubt it but it’d be interesting…

The only thing I would ever want a Beetle for is to remove that fruity bud-vase and replace it with a loaded pistol while driving around.

How about this variant: no Beetles whatsoever?

What they shoulda done is base it on the ORIGINAL Up! concept’s rear engine design, but now the VW chickened out on that I guess the Golf V platform will have to do.

Did anyone who is asking for engine in the ass of the beetle ever drove the original? Let me explain to you: steering it was a problem, bad weather was a problem, and I am not talking rain or snow: wind above 10-15 mph was lifting bug up. To change spark plugs you had to unmount rear wheel in order to get to the plug. To put in perspective, this operation was like putting your pants backwards and then trying to pee without dropping pants.

mayer_ray_nagin, this is piece loving vehicle. I would substitute silly flower vase with electric vagina to make that thing to give it more testosterone, but then dikes will be buying them just like Subaru.

I vote for these 3 variants: squished, splattered and zapped.

^^^^ no, no, no. It is just to be driven 7 days out of the month. You see your honey pulling it out of garage, you ski doodle out of town hunting/camping/fishing in a hurry.

I guess all those Porsche racing titles won by cars with “engine in the ass” were just a fluke. Yes, I drove both a Beetle and a Super Beetle at one point, and I helped a friend restore one of the actual Herbie stunt cars from the movies (he rescued it from an LA junkyard). If you want to call it a Beetle, put the engine in the rear.

Dykes don’t buy Subarus, dykes buy Jeep Wranglers. I’m not kidding about that at all, there’s a lesbian bar in town and the parking lot on a saturday night looks like a Jeep dealership.

xyunya, you have obviously not driven a modern 911. I’m pretty sure they’ve got the kinks worked out. Plus the original Beetle weighed about 1500lb, and had sides like bricks, with which any car would be scary in the wind!

if this is an automotive website, why does everyone always end up calling eachother queer & make fun of pretty much everything anyone does. this is 2008, not 1905. leave everyone be & just be whatever even if you are a “dyke” or a “queer”. get over it.

as for the beetle. as a proud owner of a restored bug, the next gen beetle should def. be rear engine rear wheel but that won’t happen so i’ll take a Ragster & a Dune, please.

Anyways, the Beetle is old and washed up, like the PT Cruiser. Everytime I see one I laugh at how stupid the moron driving it must feel after the novelty wore off in, oh, what was it, 1999?

assmonkey, i’m quite aware we didn’t have computers in 1905. the point was, in modern times, you should be more open minded. let well enough alone. and unless you live in a town of population 5 where they still hang blacks & drag gays behind trucks, i don’t see why anyone has that point of view. & even if you are in pop-5, its not ok. get over yourself…

Mugen… I agree with ur beetle comment. Remember the Beetle Turbo S & the Beetle RSi i think it was? both were awesome cars & the exterior tweaks made them look less, girly?

This site has become a joke. It’s not about cars anymore. It’s been hijacked by a bunch of small minded, trash talking imbeciles each trying to out do the other with their use of insults. There’s no real discussion of cars just an exchange of adolescent curse words. They should shut this site down and start over with age restrictions and a code of conduct. Those who want to continue the insults can do it on their own time without subjecting the rest of us to it.
