It appears as though Volkswagen ’s relocation from Detroit to Washington was just be the first step in the company’s plan to completely overhaul its North American operations. VW is also considering opening a U.S. plant as well as designing products specifically for the U.S. market.
Because of the strength of the Euro, a production move from out of Germany and into the U.S. would make financial sense. VW CEO Stefan Jacoby said that the company would like “to reduce dependence on exchange rates,†although he didn’t comment any further on the subject. VW currently has one North American plant located in Mexico and operated a plant in Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1998.
BMW recently announced it would shift SUV production to its U.S. plant in order to take advantage of the favorable exchange rate.
According to Automotive News, VW is also planning to develop products specifically for America as well as rejuvenating its dealer network.
