It appears as though Volkswagen’s relocation from Detroit to Washington was just be the first step in the company’s plan to completely overhaul its North American operations. VW is also considering opening a U.S. plant as well as designing products specifically for the U.S. market.
Because of the strength of the Euro, a production move from out of Germany and into the U.S. would make financial sense. VW CEO Stefan Jacoby said that the company would like “to reduce dependence on exchange rates,” although he didn’t comment any further on the subject. VW currently has one North American plant located in Mexico and operated a plant in Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1998.
BMW recently announced it would shift SUV production to its U.S. plant in order to take advantage of the favorable exchange rate.
According to Automotive News, VW is also planning to develop products specifically for America as well as rejuvenating its dealer network.

I would like to know how many of VW’s sold in US are actually build in in Germany. Most of them have VINs with VWII indicating Mexico as birth place. How the strong Euro affects Mexican peso to USD exchange rates? This is nuts. Furthermore, they had factory in PA 20 years ago that they closed and moved operation to Mexico. Perhaps it is Porsche they plan to build here.

Build something with long-term reliability, not engineered for four years before failure, and I’ll consider it … otherwise, you clowns will never get a penny of mine.

VW had a huge Rabbit plant here in the late 70’s.
I can’t even find a picture of it online to see what it looked like. Millions of $$$ wasted and gone.

Unfortunately, the first US-specific product of VW’s new regime will be the Chrysler minivan rebadge.. not an illustrious beginning. Can’t we have another Rabbit pickup instead?

I am always surprised to see all the bitching on here about VW reliability, in Europe they are one of the leaders in that respect. Perhaps it has something to do with where the cars are manufactured?
