In a bid to take on an increasingly large number of international rivals, Volkswagen will take the wraps off of a new North American market-oriented EV concept car early next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Not much is known about the EV yet, but the USA Today says that the car will be a “pure concept,” which means that it won’t be a thinly-veiled production car.
The EV shown in Detroit also isn’t expected to share much other than battery technology with the Lavida EV VW plans to sell soon in China, its largest single market.
With its emphasis on diesel engines across the globe, VW has arguably been late to the EV market. Hybrid versions of its Jetta and Passat models are on the horizon for North American buyers, while its high-performance Touareg Hybrid was introduced last year for global markets including the U.S. But the new EV is more likely to go up against compact cars like the Nissan Leaf and Ford Focus Electric.
Stay tuned for more details ahead of the Detroit show, a venue that has become increasingly focused on alternative fuel vehicles.
