Unemployment may be a problem for most of the world’s economies, but it isn’t an issue for Volkswagen. The German automaker says it will hire as many as 65,000 new works as part of its quest to become the world’s largest automaker by 2018.
VW currently employs about 435,000 workers, but that number will balloon to about 500,000 over the next seven years.
“We’re assuming that 500,000 employees will work for us company-wide long-term,” VW CEO CEO Martin Winterkorn said. “In addition, our suppliers and dealerships each employ more than 1 million people.”
Winterkorn added that VW would likely cap employment at about 500,000 to ensure high levels of productivity and efficiency.
Part of that hiring blitz will include about 7,500 new university grads this year. Most of those new hires will focus on VW’s electric mobility initiative.
