Germany’s Bild newspaper is reiterating recent reports that the next-generation Volkswagen Golf will arrive as a 2008 model. The company is reportedly opting for a 5-year cycle instead of a more traditional 7-year one, citing increased competitiveness in the segment. In December, AutoBild — the automotive branch of Bild — said the Golf VI and a Golf SUV would arrive as 2008 models, while the Golf-based Volkswagen Scirocco coupe would come a year later.

Its strange for ‘Bild’ to claim Volkswagen is opting for a 5 year cycle instead of a 7 year cycle, considering the Golf 5 is just now about to reach the USA. If its gonna be replaced in 2008, that would mean a 2 year cycle for the USA and a 3 year cycle for Europe. Really, the Golf 4 is still on the VW USA site. I’m sure there’s gonna be refreshes for the Golf and Jetta to give it a more Eos like front end, But the notion that 2008 is gonna somehow constitute a 5 year product cycle is transparently wrong.

It’s a 5 year cycle based on it’s European introduction from two years ago.
