The Volkswagen Group is said to be interested in entering the F1 racing series in 2015, creating a German competitor to the Renault, Mercedes, and AMG alliance currently leading the championship. The company is reportedly working on building its own chassis for the series, though it's also rumored to be in talks with Sauber.

The in-house chassis would be a longer-term goal and would be designed at Porsche's Motorsport Center in Weissach, Germany. Porsche is developing its Le Mans race car at the facilities as well. Some believe tests of the Le Mans racer will translate to the F1 effort as well, with the car perhaps being a highly-disguised single-seater. VW recently took over Porsche.

The FIA is also supportive of the auto giant's unofficial plans, says a SpeedWeek report.

VW would help boost its image through such an effort in emerging and increasingly key markets such as China, though it would also help the brand name in established places like Brazil, the U.S., and Russia.

VW is also officially entering another costly world motorsport with the World Rally Championship with a Polo R.
