Volkswagen’s unprecedented growth in the Chinese market will culminate in more than 2 million deliveries this year, the automaker announced today.

VW, which counts China as its largest single market, has seen a massive shift in focus over the last decade as it has sought to keep up with huge demand in China.

Just 20 years ago, VW formed a joint venture with First Automotive Works – FAW – in China, and the partnership is expected to build its 1 millionth car this year alone, a testament to the market’s phenomenal growth.

In fact, China has become VW’s “second home,” says CEO Martin Winterkorn. With about a quarter of its overall sales, China eclipsed Germany, the United States and Brazil to become VW’s largest market in 2009.
