Who wants to buy a $70k car from a VW dealer selling and servicing Rabbits and Beetles? Part of what makes people buy an upscale car is separated and upscale sales and service experiences. That's why the Hyundai Genesis just might fail shortly after takeoff.

VW could go back to basics and once again make quality reliable cars at a decent price.
In Germany you also have to realize that most Germans will buy German product no matter how crappy it is...the Fatherland must be supported by all good German boys and girls.

VW should stick to what they know best...making decent cars for under $32K. Let Audi be their premier brand and VW be the economy brand, not this bullshit marketing plan they've come up with that Audi will be the performance car and VW will fill the luxury market. Fail once in life at something and learn and you can be considered intelligent, fail twice at that same thing and you're a moron.

The Phaeton had more in common with a Continental GT/Flying Spur... as such, some would argue that those aren't real Bentleys - that they're more VW than Bentley.

Either way... the Phaeton is technically speaking, a phenomenal car, but it has some inherent flaws that really don't have anything to do with the car itself. First of all... at $60K, it's priced out of reach from most Americans. But then, those who are fortunate enough to afford one are also mainly a bunch of badge-whores and wouldn't think of buying something with a VW badge on it... even if it is a better car than most of those with three-point stars or gold-plated "Ls."

Had I that sort of money to piss away on a car... I'd surely buy one of these over any Mercedes, BMW, or Lexus.

The original Phaeton had more in common with a Bentley than with the Passat. The problem was, it *looked* like a Passat. Plus, that big ol' "VW" on the grille was like an electric fence to potential customers. Wonder how it would have done as a "Porsche Phaeton"?

Well, if last year they didn't sell any in Germany, that means the 45% increase this year is well, not that much :p
This car didn't sell well in Europe and it currently has the lowest resale value on the market. A full option W12 version can go from the original 90k euros to about 30k in a couple of years. Now thats a bad investment right there!
Of course it's underrated, that's why it doesn't sell: it's a luxury car that looks just as boring as any Golf/Jetta. In that price range, most people want more than quality, they want something a bit over the top!
I'd rather get the "why the **** did you buy the 7 Series, it looks like crap" that the "meh" you get when you show you brand new Phaeton to your friends..

Yeah I thought the Phaeton was an overpriced Passat, but I wouldn't know. Well didn't they offer a V12 Phaeton? Wasn't that well over 60k?

not ready for $60,000+ VW's? What do you call a decked out Touareg? and the problem with the last phaeton was that it might have been over $60k, and might have had some good lux to it, but it was still just a big passat which is just a big jetta.
