Volkswagen is reportedly at work on preparing to open its 10th vehicle assembly plant in China, a move that would firmly cement the market as the German brand’s most important.
By comparison, VW just opened its first modern assembly plant in the United States earlier this year.
Reuters reported that VW is looking to put the plant in Xingjiang province in far northwestern China. Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily newspaper said that the plant will build midsize cars and that it will be located in Urumqi, the capital of Xingjiang.
It is unclear just which of its Chinese partners would help co-develop the plant. VW works with FAW and SAIC, two brands with whom it is capable of building nearly 2 million cars in China annually, but the automaker is hoping to expand its presence in the market to more than 2 million deliveries a year.
