Volkswagen has officially taken the wraps off of its latest Polo GTI. Think mini Golf GTI: Boasting a turbocharged and supercharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder, the little GTI will scoot to 62 mph in just 6.9 seconds before topping out at 142 mph.
The Polo GTI uses a 1.4-liter TSI motor, which features a supercharger used from idle speeds up to 3,000 rpm and a turbocharger for high-rev performance driving. VW says it cranks out about 178 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 184 lb-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm.

The TSI engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission. The front-wheel-drive hot hatch uses an electronic cross-axle traction control system in its front differential.

To make the most of the power, the Polo GTI sits about 15 mm lower than a standard model and rides on 17-inch wheels inspired by the larger Golf GTI. The front fascia has been lightly altered and the car receives a bodykit that makes it look like a 7/10ths-scale Golf GTI.

The Polo GTI receives some interior touches, too. Look for a flat-bottomed GTI steering wheel, gearshift paddles and, of course, heavily-bolstered tartan cloth-covered front sports seats.

The Polo GTI will go on sale this summer in Europe. North American sales of a GTI-styled Polo seem quite likely given that the standard Polo is set to cross the pond in one configuration or another.
