Scratchy, I am only concerned that Porsche's 911 will become diluted as a result of VW taking over. If their management is as trustworthy as you claim then I hope you are right.

I'd only ask if you really think Lamborghinis of today are on the same level of uniqueness as their older models like the Miura of the 60's, the Espada of the 70's and Countach of the 70's-80's. Perfect cars? Hell no. Direct competition to Ferrari? Not back then and I'd argue that even with their new focus they still aren't. Today's Lamborghinis are brilliantly impressive and exclusive cars but they do not win me over the way their older models do or the way the Ferrari 612 and 599 do.

Bentley has been given a second chance at life, absolutely. They are making money and playing to a certain market. I personally feel their previous Rolls-Royce based Arnage line before the new redesign is far more "Bentley" than their newer, sleeker design. Are they successful and turning a profit again? Absolutely. Who am I to throw my opinion around if I think the older ones are more unique?

Bugatti... well you have me there but their company is such a showcase that it really doesn't matter what models came before. The point of a new Bugatti is to up the ante in every possible way from the design to the performance to the luxury at no spared cost.

I have no experience with Seat and Skoda since they have never been offered in the USA.

All I mean to voice is my concern that Porsche's core model, the 911, and its many variants will become less focused and unique after several years under VW ownership. In specialty versions it's a high volume supercar that competes with lower volume supercars priced much higher. And there is no other vehicle like it.

VW has managed its acquired brands to great financial success so I can't claim and did not claim that VW will ruin the Porsche company. Lamborghini's model line hasn't been "ruined" either-- it's just not as unique as it was 25 years ago.

bad124 there's difference between sharing a platform to make a suv and a 911. I can care less if porsche makes suv sharing a platform w/ the chinese but rear engine 911? tell me how many rear engine cars besides 911 in this world?

Unless I missed it, I am surprised nooone mentioned the Cayenne and Toureg. That platform is a joint effort. Then was the 924, the 914 which was primarily developed by VW and the rights bought by Porsche...
So this really isnt a new idea, and I dont see things changing too much. At any rate at least its all German

nobody is denying vw and porsche have a shared history, but when you establish an elite marquee brand that is built on exclusivity and performance you don't start mixing and matching platforms and parts with the "people's car" brand...that erodes the exclusivity it took decades to create...

Porsche purists should know that Porsche basically founded Volkswagen and vise versa. Ferdinand Porsche designed the original Volkswagen (which became the Beetle) before his company was even building Porsche's. The original Volkswagen, or People's Car, was ordered by Hitler to be designed by Ferdinand Porsche. Given this history, I'll never understand why so many Jews buy Porsches today, but that's another story.

Porsche purists should also know that the very first Porsche, the Porsche 64 of 1939, used a lot of its components from the VW Beetle. The Porsche 365 after WWII also sourced its engine, gearbox, and suspension (yikes!) from the VW Beetle.

So Porsche purists need to suck it up and recognize that Porsche's relationship with VW goes back to its original founding. Porsche owners like to think their car is blue blooded, but it's not.

Hyperion , yeah , just like VW "ruined" Lambo and turned it into into a serious Ferrari competitor and then just "destroyed" Bentley and Bugatti. then cursed Audi by turning it into a luxury brand and raped Seat and Skoda and made them build good cars. damn you VW and your demonic ways !

btw, did you know that Ferdinand Piech , the guy who controls VW was responsible for some of the most successful racing Porsches ever, including the 917 ? if anything he will make Porsche a more focused company , according to rumours he already decided to make a new Carrera GT.

A new Porsche 914 would be great but I don't like the sound of it when the VW Group will have access and decision-making power over the 911 platform. I'd prefer not to see that model line diluted or the many specialty variants discontinued.

We can thank the brilliant upper management at Porsche for failing to realize that VW is a behemoth compared to them. Now without their independence the world will see one of the greatest automotive icons change from a cutting edge to curtailed engineering statement.

platform sharing wont harm anyone in this deal, as they said, Porsche will keep their own engine development and wont be sharing. SO with that being said, the company that most sees to benefit from this really is Audi. Porsches operations will burn on as usual unscathed. I really dont see the problem.

Writ, the Audi R4 is already Boxer/Cayman based so i dont htink a Boxer based audi TT would ever be in the mix. Sadly

i think audi could do some seriously good stuff with a porsche parts bin,
look what came of it last time!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_RS2_Avant

this thing did 0-35 mph faster than a mclaren f1 back in the day, and hauled 5 people.
I say that this is a wonderful idea as long as vw's don't get more expensive.

eleven , the V12 in the Murcielago is the last evolution of the original V12 from the Miura. the V10 in the Gallardo is an Audi engine built in Gyor, Hungary and assembled in Sant'Agata, Italy.

Speaking of VW. I have a question about VW for anyone who reads this. I'm interested in getting a Tiguan someday and I've heard from several sources that VW have electrical problems. Does anyone that own one or anyone that knows someone who has one knows what the deal with that is? Did they fix the problem in the newer cars or do they still have the problem? So far my aunt has an 02 Jetta and my cousin an 03 Golf and they hadn't had any problems that I know of.

I'm not really a Lamborghini follower - so I don't know, but aren't Lambo engines VW based? It is of course a different market, but has it bothered people? Sharing the 911 platform would be a complete waste. Most 911 detractors think it's stupid to even have a rear engined much less make another one - the Diable Smart excepted...
