JoshyLofty’s suggestion about what to do with the Scirocco if they were to bring it here was probably the best suggestion I’ve heard (for the Scirocco going stateside). He’s right. Like we all said, the only car it would compete with would be the C30 which I think for the price the GTI could do here so it would only cannibalize GTI sales, however if they were to market it more upscale that could work, but then we all know what happens when VW tries to sell an upscale vehicle (i.e Phaeton) but then the Toureg is selling…

Do a simple search on MINI start-ups … some have video showing sight and sound of ridiculous clatter on the turbo engines. Or check out places like NAM … you’ll find quite a few unhappy owners.

why could someone be scared to start their mini? i haven’t heard any horror stories & i know plenty of people with them (the car, not the story).

I think this car would be more on par with the volvo C30 as well, moreso than the mini. & i think if it were brought over to the states in a premium fashion, it wouldn’t steal sales from the GTI. so basically, give it a leather dash & come standard with a badass engine/tranny & a nav, etc. give it a higher pricetage, & then when Alfa comes stateside, it’ll have this to compete with as well.

impulsive, as I mentioned before, my experience was based “back to back” test drive of both cars (Mini in my case was not turbo around 21K with sunroof). C30 was 30K with auto and 220HP and felt like a lazy pig and wasn’t that much of a handling car. I asked to test drive manual to be fair to the car, salesman said that realistically they will not have any for foreseeable future (meaning they get models only with expensive package at 30K). I had no horror experience staring or stopping Mini. I am not denying the fact that it can happen and probably did, but not in my experience. Couple folks whom I know had Minis did not share horror stories.

If VW wants to sell this car here, and it has the looks and the name to sell, they really need to wait 2-4 years. The dollar is soft, but not dead. Americans are (for the most part) car people. We will buy them, but for many of us, $40k will buy us 2 Civics instead of 1 VW. Just wait a while, and finish up the recalls on the Passats and Tiguans.

‘xyunya’, talk to the many MINI owners who have FRIGHTENING start-up experiences … they’ll tell you handling means nothing when you are afraid to start your car. Something starting at $22ish with that experience is unacceptable.

The only purpose the Scirocco would serve would be to cannibalize sales from other VWs. That and the exchange rate makes it a pointless exercise to bring it over here.

^ The Volvo C30 has a 22k U.S.D sticker, which would put it on par of the price range of a GTI. I think the Scirocco would be right in C30 territory and even cost more. The reasons for bringing the Scirocco here are against it.

The best small car in experience is Mini. You get 90% of exotic car handling for 10% of the price. C30 is not in the same league at 50% higher price.

Would make a good competitor to like a Volve C30 but that’s about it. The Rabbit/Golf and GTI already would do the job of the Scirocco here and for less.

Yeah, thing is, were it to come stateside, it’d be much cheaper. The GTI in the UK runs the equivalent of $35,000 US (18,000 pounds), but they charge around $22k for it here.

The Scirocco would probably be around $25k if sold here. And that is still a bit too pricey.
