The Volkswagen New Beetle has carried on relatively unchanged since its market launch in 1998, but big changes are on the way for the retro tow-door as the German automaker is planning to launch an all-new model by early 2011.
The next Beetle is in line for a bevy of changes, including a platform switch. As previously reported, the new Beetle will ride on a variation of the next Jetta’s platform, providing a longer wheelbase and more interior volume. The Beetle will be produced alongside the new Jetta at VW’s Puebla, Mexico plant.

The platform switch will also provide a wider track, enhancing the Beetle’s driving characteristics. Although the next Beetle won’t be able to keep up with the Golf GTI, VW is said to be putting a heavy focus on driving dynamics. As such, the range-topping 210 horsepower 2.0L Beetle model will come equipped with a multi-link setup out back, although lesser models will make do with a torsion beam design.

A number of engine options will be on offer, including a 160 horsepower 1.4L and a U.S.-only 170 horsepower five-cylinder. A hybrid model is also said to be in the works, but it remains to be seen if VW will offer a diesel option in the United States.

Style-wise, expect the Beetle to retain most of its iconic styling, albeit with some modern touches. The current car is criticized for wasting too much space in the dash area while offering limited rear-seat room, so look for the next-gen car to address those issues.

A concept version of the next Beetle is expected to debut at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, followed by a market roll-out in early to mid-2011.
