On the heels of its Jetta Hybrid unveiling, Volkswagen is said to be readying a plug-in hybrid model for the United States market. VW’s new Jetta Hybrid model made its world debut last week at the North American International Auto Show.
Although not much about the project is known, the production version of the plug-in hybrid is expected to use the same 150 horsepower 1.4L turbocharged engine found under the hood of the Jetta Hybrid. The plug-in will sport a larger battery pack than the Jetta Hybrid, allowing for an all-electric range of up to 35 miles.
An insider revealed to Car and Driver that the plug-in is being designed for a “mass segment”, so a plug-in version of the Jetta Hybrid is certainly a possibility. However, given the added cost of the plug-in system – and the recent announcement of the Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid – VW could offer the system in its larger, and more expensive, Passat model.
No word on when the VW plug-in will hit dealerships, but reports suggest the vehicle “should be ready for sale relatively soon.” Stay tuned.
