VW recalls 25,594 Jettas for driveshaft issue

05/22/2009, 11:55 AM

By Drew Johnson

Adding to today’s list of recalls, the National Highway Safety Administration and Volkswagen of America have announced the recall of 25,594 Jetta models. The recall includes 2006-2009 model year vehicles equipped with the 2.0L engine.

According to the NHTSA’s Web site, the recall is due to a faulty drive shaft cover plate that could lead to a detached drive shaft. The screw contact plates on the drive shaft cover plate may not have been manufactured properly, resulting in improperly torqued screws. Over time, those screws could become loose, possibly resulting in the drive shaft becoming completely detached from the gearbox. Affected vehicles usually emit a knocking sound while in motion.

The NHTSA warns that a detached driveshaft could damage the vehicle’s gearbox housing, resulting in an oil leak. The oil leak could increase the likelihood of a crash for the driver as well as other motorists.

VW dealers will inspect the screws and replace them if necessary at no charge. The recall is set to officially kick off on June 19th.

I don’t know A4, it says 2.0T models, which doesn’t necessarily mean the GLI model. I guess you will find out in the mail.

I’m thinking my GTI is fine, since it’s built at a different factory in Wolfsburg.

It’s alright, i traded it in when the warranty was up and when it started puffing black smoke out of the tailpipe when i would start it. Which was the exact same thing my A4 1.8T did right before it cost me $6k to rebuild the engine and turbo.

German cars are like german woman: hop in whenever you can, take ‘em for a wild ride while they do the same to you, enjoy the awesome driving dynamics and driving feel, but NEVER EVER buy one for keeps. I lived there, I know.

Driveshaft? Wow, I didn’t know the Jetta was RWD.

Don’t you mean Halfshaft?

A4 so you do have VW reliability story to tell! FYI, after BMW I had no issues with motor(s), albeit I’ve been driving Jap cars.

mayer_ray, pounded you like a schnitzel did she? I came close once, but then she began expecting me to care about sh*t that happened to her before we met. You know, the deep stuff. She didn’t like it when I gave her a shovel and said before we go any further you need to finish the job.

This is not the first car ever to have a recall guys. I have seen numerous cars on this site with recalls left and right. I have had my GTI for a bit over 3 years and have had next to no issues. A few small nuances here and there but nothing that left me stranded or broke the bank.
I just hope this doesn’t affect my 06 GTI. We’ll see I guess.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone…VW consistently ranks at the bottom of reliability studies. Although this is probably precautionary, a driveshaft disconnecting from the gear box can never be good.

Thanks TornadoGTI. We thought this was the first ever recall. Thanks for putting us in check.

VW are POS.

Know what you mean, Johnny. Deep down we men are truly shallow. Thank God for that – women worry too much.

Still, I learned very well how to fake like I care. Maintaining the illusion for more than a few months is problematic, though.

Like I said b4, all they have goin 4 dem is german engineering n some good quality materials. Anymore slip-ups like dis, n dere’s gonna be some big problems 4 ‘em.

They need ta keep ish simple like the good ol’ vw’s; the rabbits the cabi’s, the golfs n gti’s; those was the good ol’ days. A big screwdriver, pliers n set of wrenches n u cud’ve fixed just about anything by urself, by hands!

@anti-believer – Yes, you are right, they are POS. That must explain why they are fighting for the number one spot in the world for unit sales. In fact, so far this year, they are number one. Weird… I guess even with “some” reliability issue people still like them more than any other car in the world. Guys at VW must be on to something. It is called quality.

vw may not have the best reliability but they do have everything else. They are fun to drive, nice looking, the jetta for years has had the nicest interior in its class. I am still not an uberfan though.

How is it only 25,000 vehicles if it was over a 3 year span? They only sold 25,000 Jetta 2.0’s? Side note- I wonder if the ownership “change” will affect VW quality for the better.

Nissan recalls 360,000 Muranos because of the air intake duct that can disconnect leading to the increased probability of a crash, but this is normal for all of you. When VW recalls, it’s because of lack of reliability. You’re all f*cking retarded.
I can’t believe I came back to read your SH*T!

VWs fail in all sorts of interesting ways. I have a co-worker with a GTI that has a transmission which overheats and blows a fuse. I see Jettas, GLIs, GTIs and Bugs with black tailpipes and crusty bumpers all the time, motors giving up the ghost in just 3-5 years. Only the most blinded partisan can argue that they get by on “quality” and not just marketing hype.
