VW makes crap. The 1.8’s with their oil sludge problem seizing engines at 40k is unforgivable for such a large company. I agree with Fletch that they make nice eye candy- tasteful interiors, nice fit and finish. But it’s the mechanicals you don’t see that makes you regret your decision to buy one. I know I have. Do yourself a favor – never buy a VW.

VW / Audi has great fit and finish and nice interiors. Awful reliability, I will not buy one.

Funny that they recall it for a cheap ass heat shield and not the obvious faulty coilpacks. I had 2 take a dump on me when I had my B5 Passat(and I wasn’t chipped)

Not 100% certain, but aren’t all US Passats made in Germany? If so, there goes the arguments of the freaks who say they’ll only buy VWs made in Germany and not Mexico.

Fact is, poor quality is a pervasive VW issue.

They should have a recall on the steering column. Mine just went out with less than 47,000 miles on my B5.5. Over $600 for the part plus 2 hours labor. That would be a legit recall, not this crap.

These fixes sound more like long-term maintainance schedule additions than true recalls.. I mean, what is the likelihood that 5-10 year old fuel lines and valves might be going bad, or the firewall may be damaged? I think VW is for once being cautious and checking potentially faulty items before anyone has actually had an issue with them.. and I commend them for that.

Sucks for Volkswagen…it looks like they are set to maintain their MOST recalls title for another year.

But why is LLN using the picture of a non-1999 to 2005 model year Passat? The picture is misleading because it makes it seem like the new Passats are affected when this is actually about older cars.

VW- Virtually Worthless. You read it here first. The car MOST SEEN at repair shops here in San Francisco. And strangely enough- BMW- the one usually derided for reliability- is almost never seen broken down or in the repair shops (except for wiper blade changes and brake pads).
