I won’t be buying a VW product anytime soon. They look great and drive nice off the lot. Even the base Golf I test drove 10 years ago wasn’t half bad. But after a friend spent $1000 to have an alternator replaced, I got scared off.

My bad, that was a typo — it was a 1976, and a grey-market Euro version to boot. I had it confused with my father’s 911 D-series, which was a 1971. You’d have to tear one apart to know this, but even though it had a 12-volt ignition, the wiring loop that ran the windshield wipers, FM/AM radio and interior dash lights was not strong enough to drive a tape deck and would drop to 11 or 10 volts (my Fluke showed it as low as 9, with the headlights on). To get it up to the level that it would power the radio and speakers I had to cross-wire a ton of **** and skip the fuse box in some cases. Even then, the dash lights would pulse with the beat in the music, an unintended (but cool) effect. Safety really wasn’t my priorities in those days…

I own a 2001 Passat. It’s given me more problems then any other car I’ve ever owned. It’s a piece of crap. I know three other VW’s and same story. They make for nice eye candy but mechanically they are hopeless. Do yourself a favor and never buy a VW.

A friend of mine had 1999 VW Passat. When something broke, part cost was $600. His mechanic said that same part for Ford Taurus would’ve cost him $200. So, he went and bought 2001 Taurus. Two years later he got rid of VW and still drives Taurus, as it’s more reliable.
Another person whom I know had 2000 Passat. Few years later he was happy to trade it for a KIA!!! Reason? He had to pay close to $7,000 for repairs every year!

yeah htay9500 I agree. His is pretty nice. I like it a lot. Black metallic, Recaro bucket seats, 6spd, BBS rims a pretty peppy 1.8T. He was actually trying to trade it in for the Cobalt SS Turbocharged (I tried to persuade him to keep what he has, and I’m a SS S/C owner) well the dealer wouldn’t give him enough for what he owed on it (typical right?) so he didn’t get it.

lol the day after he got a APR tune, and turbo inlet, and now he’s keeping up with modded Mustang GT’s… He has a turbo back exhaust coming soon too.

From what he heard from other owners after 50,000 miles is when the Jetta starts falling apart and although he’s barely over 50k miles and doing good, he hoping his doesn’t have those problems…

About 02WRXPSM’s first car being a “1971 VW Rabbit” — the Rabbit did not debut in the US until late 1974.

My first car was a ‘75 Scirocco. A sad and terrible piece of business.

My family knows about three households with semi-new VWs: a New Beetle, a Passat Wagon, and a Rabbit. All three of them are in tears over reliability issues and unscheduled service. The New Beetle owner is trying to get my state’s lemon law invoked.

VWs have long-standing poor build quality reputations in the US, especially those of Mexican vintage.

The reliability pecking order these days goes: Asians, Americans, Europeans.

ouch, Yeah Tiguan isn’t even out on the U.S market yet. I personally like VW’s. And I don’t have anything to say about their quality because I haven’t owned one. I also think it comes down to personal experience because a good friend of mine has an MK IV 04 Jetta GLI, and it’s got over 50,000miles on it and he hasn’t had any problems with it. He also bought it used with like 22k miles. And the Jetta doesn’t have the best reliability or quality ratings so it just goes to show you.

What is funny is that J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey ranked VW in 31 rst place for 2007. I dont think even the YUGO had a lower ranking.

My first car was a 1971 VW Rabbit, which I tore down to the bare frame, rebuilt, converted to 12v so I could put a tape deck in it, and drove for 6 years. Great little car. This is true of VW no longer. Look at the Toureg, which had the most service visits per vehicle in three straight years of production. Look at my brother’s Passat, which has been in for service seven times in two years. For a while it wouldn’t start whenever it rained — and he lives in EUGENE, OREGON, the rain capital of the world! He had a New Beetle for seven months, and traded that in when it began to show the same gremlins and odd behavior. When your cars are designed in Germany but assembled in Brazil, Mexico and other places all over the world (just to avoid paying astronomically high German labor prices) out of parts sourced from the bins of other carmakers, you’re going to have problems.

I’m European and I while I don’t think VW is ****, I do think their cars are pretty average – in terms of reliability, built quality and ride. Grey average, one may say. Certainly better than French and Italian cars, better than Big 3 cars, but lagging behind Japanese.

Read any long term (60K miles) test in European car magazine and you’d struggle to find one that would be won by a VW.

Everybody has recalls, it’s the severity that matters.

hateful: if you look closely enough, the jetta looks almost like a last gen corolla (put them side to side).
