VW releases second-generation Golf Plus

12/03/2008, 9:49 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the second-generation Golf Plus at today’s Bologna Motor Show in Italy. The updated Golf Plus is heavily based on the sixth-generation Golf, which was unveiled in August. The Golf Plus, a taller, roomier version of the standard Golf, will go on sale in Europe in Spring 2009.

On the outside, the new Golf Plus gains styling upgrades similar to those on the regular model. A wide, horizontal grille with a pair of black cross bars dominates the front end – a style first introduced on the Scirocco.

The Golf Plus gains Volkswagen’s ParkAssist as an option. The system automatically guides the Golf Plus into parking spots during parallel parking maneuvers. Volkswagen will also offer a rear-mounted camera to further help parking.

Inside, the Golf Plus retains much of the standard Golf’s style and upgrades.

The engines are generally expected to be carryovers and should start with a 1.4 liter TSI engine capable of up to 44.8 mpg in the European combined cycle. Various TDI diesel engines will also be on offer.

A more accurate name would be the “Golf Minus.”

The cabin layout and ergonomics should be a study for the rest of the industry (whatever we get in US). Clean, simple, functional: form follows function, and not other way around.

Now why couldn’t we have that here instead of the crappy overpriced Tiguan?

the tiguan is a great vehicle but this would be a stellar addition to the US lineup, especially to battle the Suzuki SX4 crossover that seems to be in a market all by itself.

not to mention it has those gorgeous LED taillights, that amazing interior, and infinite practicality with great fuel economy.
