All of those commercials, including the GTI fast series are brilliant. Not only are they entertaining and funny, but they capture your attention like no other car ad giving good exposure to the new GTI. Now all they need to do is bring back “Fahvergnugen” and this whole Germanglish offensive will be in full effect!

He was also the quiet bad guy in Fargo, and I think he might have been one of the nihilists in Big Liebowski, but I’m not sure. (I suppose I could go to imdb.com and look)

I’m a 20 year old male and not a fan of VW cars. That said, i think these along with the fast ads are the best car advertisements I have ever seen. Very funny and a pleasure to watch.

I love the whole representin Deutchland thing, in fact I have it written in German on my car. I drive a 97 Porsche, and would never sell it for a volkswagen, but still, at least somebody is standing up for Germany, thier cars, and giving them the honor they deserve for building some of the best cars in the world.

While I really loved the commercials (adn recognized Stormare as the sinus-challenged eye doctor from Minority Report) I have to say that reading the posts has been as entertaining, if not more so! Kudos to Mr. Lynch for his detailed post.

I think they hit the nail on the spot with these ads. The “fast and the furious” era is gone and dead, only leaving behind a huge trail of tastelessly modified cars. It’s typical to see VW steer their customers away from such a pathetic trend since it goes against all the styling values of VW or any other European car. Can’t help but love them…can’t wait for them to air on TV.

Actually, if you Google VW history, they are in fact the ones that ‘employed’ Jewish slaves. They even set up a reparation fund for those affected. As for negative German comments, perhaps you need to get your head out of your arse. VW did not get rich on the backs of slaves. VW was created by Hitler, and used for his purposes during WW2. It wasn’t until much later that VW, after being freed from their war bonds, was able to come into their own. German automobiles are well-known by true auto experts as being far superior to American cars in most cases. BTW, you would probably be surprised to see how much of your ‘American’ car is actually made in Germany – hell, German car companies own a few ‘American’ brands now. Feuer Frei!

I wonder if they’ll include rebates so you can pay for all the repairs that will be needed. $1300 for a new a/c compressor after 60K miles was just one of the larger expenses I had for my Beetle. To make myself feel better at the dealer, I find solace looking over the repair tickets for other poor slobs who bought into VWs history of quality only to be sorely disappointed. VW should do themselves a favor and just disable the Check Engine light. Sad to say that my ‘73 Fastback is my most reliable ride.

In my optinon, VW is the best car available:
reliable, good handling, fast, good gas Mileage
( 39 MPG after Removing the “Cat” ),
and gives the owner many many years of dependable useage.

I do had other cars as well, such as american cars
(Chevy, Ford ect.), and they were just hassle and
“Fix or repair daily”.

I though they were funny commercials and as you know things are funny because there’s some truth to them.

These commercials are of the hook! This car has a light body, big horsepower, and some sick rims that are F#$%^& sweet for a lil car! Its about time they put these gurly cars like the focus,civic,cavalier and trash them for a lighter and faster German machine. I’m not a VW guy but, VW,Mercedes,BMW sound really good when you ride in them. Better than any jap crap! Got to love the accent.

Being that i have a 1979 SUper Beetle Convertible as my daily driver. I can say that 27 years later, it’s still (relatively) reliable.

Being a previous VW owner, i’ve loved VW since i was old enough to know what cars where. I used to own a Fox and Quantum GL5. Those cars where one fo the best cars ive ever owned. If i didnt have so many vehicles right now i would definetly buy a VW again, bring back the R32 and i will. Love the commercials. Goes right along with some of the Mazda commercails. To each his own. German cars have soul. You have to own one. Two diametrically opposed philosophies(ricers and Teutons). Respect the emotionally stolid and insanely brilliant Krauts, and we won’t comment on the criminal lifestyle of pimpin’ or whatever.

You drive German just for the enjoyment of driving one with no particular place to go.

I remember seeing a VW poster in the early 70’s showing Adolph with his entourage of military adviser looking at a model of the VOLKSWAGEN (Bug) …the “peoples car”
and the caption read “Advertising makes it happen”.

Just to clear things up Hitler did not invent the VW, Dr.Porshe had been peddling the idea usucessfully to German Motorcycle Manufacturers for years.

Also the present VW is not the same VW that used slave labor. The wartime company was a bomb damaged, partially gutted building after the war, no admin, no money no execs. The British occupiers got the factory going to put the local population to work “and provide themselves and the occupation forces with vehicles and maintinence” they handed it to the new German goverment when they left, the German goverment ran it for a decade or so till it went public and became a private corperation with publicly avalible stock.

The VW company of today had NO tie to the “Strength through Joy” car of the Reich.

And lastly VW did NOT pay for slave laborers, the present company is not related to the previous one.. You are confusing it with what was left of I.G.Farben. The last of which WAS liquidated for just that.

They DID on the other hand take reponsiblity for the VW savings books used by the party in the late thirties and the 40s to swindle German citizens out of money saved for cars they never recieved. “The money from the saving books was in an East German Bank”

The ad agency that created these commercials gets it. Volkswagon gets it. Some of the people who’ve made comments here CLEARLY don’t get it. These ads are brilliant. I can only hope that this is a sign the the “ricer” fad is on it’s way out. May those ricers rest in peace along with giant lapel polyester lesiure suits.

I’m from Germany, and I must say that I don’t like VW very much. The TV ads are always good, but the cars are ****. I like the asian cars, to example Honda.

When I bought a brand new tub(’92 Golf)from the VW showroom ,I was blown away by the quality and design. The colours ,composite materials ,cloth fabrics, ergonomics…everything, really.I had trouble deciding what to drive on what day(my other car was a factory new ‘92 BMW 325 is).

i went selected by MTV show Pim my Ride, and they really left my 94 white Honda the coolest way possible. the 1st time i saw these commercial, i just thouht the GTI tech surely costs millions, why throw it away everything to the trash with these ” just-so-stupid-” commercials, sorry “whe are just trying to be like americans.”

Ray, Ray, a mint 30 year old Beetle cab on a high school lot would have girls all over it. A 10 year pimped unit would have them yelling “Jeffery Dahmer”.I have not owned an original Bug, but one was in my high school garage to work on. I noticed the curious sound of quality when I slammed the door shut. I have driven Beetles and they are very fun because of the flat windshield,German foreign aura, small size, and unique layout.

We love watching these commercials here at work. We crowd around my desk and just laugh. Peter is wonderful and couldn’t be better.

Some would equate car preferences to specific cultures and demographics (and many of the stereotypes, for choice of wheels / car make / accessories do seem to hold true). Making fun of stereotypes is dangerous business when a company has an image to maintain.

I am shocked that the ACLU and other organizations haven’t come out the of woodwork and screamed “racism” and ordered a boycott of VW.

That said, the commercials are absolutely hilarious, and I think they will prove effective with the specific demographic they are targeting.

I’d rather drive in complete empty highway isolation a high mountain road with a perfect 924(944 engine) as fast as possible without going off the road, than participate in the seem-to-be-constipated, dead-soul, herky-jerky, stop-and-go, mow down-down-some-Vancouver pedestrians-and-get-deported-back-to-country-of-origin kind of activity.

You produce a nice 10 year old Tercel, untouched, bone factory stock on any dealer’s lot. Any make dealer’s lot, then watch the dealers adopt the gangster tactics of our rice-munching friends from the East,
trying to get their hands on that car. You produce a flawless(white)Accord hatchback 1989 model with 15,000 km and watch me adopt asian-gang methods to get my hands on it. I’m just joking, but cars like that Accord hatch are purist designs. As is. That’s just me talking. Defending what Mercedes-Benz infers…an eye for the finer things.

hmm… my mom used to own a VW GOLF CL (1996) and one time it crashed into a suzuki Vitara, and the suzuki got a dent and my VW only had a scratch!! propz to my VW, but, it got a bit to old, so we had to distroy it i loves my VW, we used to go comping with it, and wash it, we loved it soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo damn much!!!

To Tumbleweed or The ” Purist”

As I said, I ran the tracks which means the circuit, not running people down. It’s a race circuit which is a control area with rules for safety. Tell me purist, do you fell at peace when you fall to your knees and pray to God. My peace is racing. I live it and breath it as do you to your folk. I can see myself runing he track when I close my eyes. To break the limits or to reach a freedom which only one can try by breaking a limit that stands front of him. To find ones strenght and weakness and improve on ones skill. That’s what true racer is. As you said ” to each his own”. Now to the real point, in my opition as racer, Volkswagon shows videos of that smashing tuners to say they better. Honestly prist do you think that a Volkswagon Golf Mk 4 can bet a perectly tune car on the circuit. In my case “No”. Ever a Volkswagon Golf Mk 4 have there limits.

I personally liked the commercials and found them quite humorous. But I’m also really surprised a major auto manufacturer would call out the ricer community like that and openly mock them! I mean I think ricejobs look stupid and sound awful also. Why do people think that just because something is imported from Germany its better then say U.S.
I haven’t seen any record of German cars being any more reliable, powerful, or fun to drive then ANY others.

Being a mechanic turned engineer I have to say that VWs are some of the most beautifully engineered vehicles in existence. I currently own 4 of them ranging from 1981 until 2001 (the 86 is an audi…but still made by vw). I also own a Honda civic and a Toyota van. The Toyota was my first car. I got it when I was 15 and I’ll never throw it away. It has 278,000 miles on it and it runs great. It is, however, an engineering nightmare, has more electrical problems than all of my vws combined, and almost nothing works in it anymore but the motor and headlights. The 4wd is phenomenal, though, and I just love how goofy it looks. I cant really complain about the civic other than the fact that it’s on its 3rd transmission and burns oil. I travel for my job, and having a fear of flying, choose to drive everywhere I go. 9 times out of 10, I’m in a vw. I’ve never been let down by one yet. I do the scheduled maintenance, and they’ve treated me well. Parts are cheaper than the Honda or Toyota, and easier to find. They’re comfortable, and ergonomically amazing (though nothing compares to the shifter in my civic…or any other Honda for that matter) and my 01 golf tdi can get over 50mpg. Vws are cheap to insure and cheap to maintain and unbelievably utilitarian. My stock audi can do 0-60 in less than 8 seconds, gets 25mpg, has a top speed of 140mph, and weighs over 3300lbs. it also has heated leather, power everything, awd, abs, 4-wheel disc, and 4-wheel independent suspension. It’s also fully galvanized and has not 1 spot of rust. My Honda on the other hand…smells bad and rusts a lot. As far as dealerships go, I’ve never been to a Toyota dealership…so I know nothing about them. The Honda dealership that replaced the tranny in the civic the first time had no idea why the reverse gear seized solid to the mainshaft, nor did they seem too interested in fixing it when the gear oil drain plug magically fell out and the tranny blew up 3 months later. Vw dealerships are expensive as sin, but the only time I’ve ever needed to go to one, was when some drunk woman in a caravan hit my golf when trying to parallel park. Her insurance company bought me a new bumper and the dealership installed it. I’ve done every other bit of maintenance or repair on my vws and I can tell you from experience they are just flat out EASY to work on. Only basic tools are required, and stuff is laid out pretty plain and simple in the repair manual. I replaced the clutch in my rabbit in 2 hours in my driveway alone…I think I needed 3 wrenches and a screwdriver. The clutch kit was 80 dollars…can’t beat that. Later I replaced the water pump and timing belt for like 75 dollars total, including all the fluids, a new timing belt tensioner, and a new thermostat. That’s pretty friggin cheap. It makes me laugh pretty hard when I see some kid with a Honda fully equipped with a cold air intake and a body kit thinking he’s the coolest thing on 4 wheels. I don’t think I could stand the stupid cherry bomb exhaust note for more than a 5 mile drive, let alone a 1000 mile drive. Smart people drive VWs. High school kids trying desperately to get laid drive riced out jap cars. That’s the bottom line. Representing Deutschland!

and responding to something i just read…german cars are better. maybe not more powerful, but do you really need power driving from your parents driveway to school? they are, however, more reliable. tell me why GM is down the tubes right now and losing maket share every day. or why Dodge is owned by a german parent company. germans make better beer, better cars, and better sausage than us here in america. people just need to accept it and move on.

my 1991 Pontiac Bonneville (not a sporty car in any respect) has well over 284,000,000 miles on it, seriously. And it sat out behind my house in the dirt for the past two years and, several accedents with deer. Plus harsh Michigan winters. And all it took to start was a new battery and a clean air filter to get it running like it did before. All I did was just perform tune-ups every once in a while.

However the machinerey that I work on at a Chrysler Plant in Detriot (Most of the machines are STRICTLY German made, and imported from Mercedes-Benz etc.) Are terribly unreliable and are extreamaly stupid in design.

Mabey the US economy wouldn’t be so fricken bad if Stupid US Manufacturing companies would become more competitive and stop allowing or even encourageing foreign manufactures from buying them out.

But on a lighter note, those commercials did make me laugh.

our economy is bad because of a combination of our clueless administration and companies like GM..who made your pontiac. our administration offers benefits to companies who outsource their labor and manufacturing when they should be penalizing it. look at NAFTA and GATT. and companies like GM….between 2006 and 2008 they will be closing operations here in the US equivalent to nearly 30,000 jobs. why? cuz its cheaper to make **** elsewhere because of the afformentioned clueless administration…and cuz they make **** cars to begin with and they arent turning a profit. they make more cars now in ontario then they do in michigan….very american of them. the only reason crysler is owned by a german parent is cuz they were in the ****ter just like GM and daimler-benz bought them up and saved their asses. daimler-crysler owns nearly 13 percent of mitsubishi motors in an attempt to save their asses too, but mitsubishi’s future is still looking grim. summation=american automobile engineering has fallen by the wayside. the germans and the japs just plain do it better, though i drive german for utilitarian reasons.

I’m an American Engineer that is of German descent. I appreciate attention to detail and reliability the Germans put into their products. It’s a shame American car companys can’t get a clue and follow suit…

The first new car I ever purchased was a Honda Civic ‘98. Before that I had an 87 Accord that was just a workhorse. My next new car was a 2000 Acura Integra. I really liked those cars, though had no notion of ‘ricing them up’. The tin can exhausts and stupid spoilers are for the little kids who want the other little kids to think they’re cool.

Anyway, my wife bought a 2003 Jetta 1.8T after her 88 Chevy died. The first time I drove it, I was AMAZED and how unbelieveably well this car is put together. Solid, fast, handles exceptionally well, and has still not had a single issue. So, 1 year ago, I bought my own VW. A 2005 Passat GLX V6. Not a big knock on them… they have their place, but I’ll never drive a japanese car again! The germans make a mighty fine auto.

HAH! Those that take offense, are typically those that need to say “wha?”. All the hoopla with rice rocket paint jobs from a bad 80’s ad will die down just like how Nirvana destroyed “hair bands.” I will keep my 86 GTI forever! (Stock paint I might add heh heh)

I’m not an angry person but these commercials just piss me off. I dont understand. whenever i watch these i want to punch something in the freaking face. They make me so mad. That guy doenst even have a real german accent. Its swedish. VWs suck and I would never buy one. You guys suck.

A new VW performs very very well, but it also has numerous other qualities. I’m looking at the sum of the qualities of the car. Eddy Murphy drove something like a 1965? Porsche 356 in one of his earlier motion pictures. Why would he do that? Can you see what I’m saying? It is very subjective.

BMW used to make very socialist type almost plain looking cars, but to me, that was a large part of the attraction. I think the constant complaining of the masses has been pulling, dragging, and wearing on those designers.

People jost don’t seem to realize that in addition to ownership of the manufacturers listed, VW also owns Bently and Bugatti. Remember, the Veyron is built by VW, has a W-16, 1001 hp powerplant under the hood. Should be good for well over 250mph. They don’t need to do much more to the GTI. Why should they feel obligated to impress the “boyz” with mamma’s coffee table mounted on the trunk of their Taiwanese (oops I mean Japanese–same thing) carzzz?

Right, but Technique isn’t all. Japanese cars look like they’ve been designed by blind First Semester Art Students…No Japanese car really looks quite good.

Right….besides S2000, Eclipse, NSX, RSX, 350Z, RX8, let’s say (which, btw, almost all are much more engineered than V-Dub’s so called “hot hatch”), most of them look like crap…it all comes to what do you prefer, ordinary looking+real engineering or pretty good looking+****ty engineering…I, for one, prefer the first option…If GTI mk5 is “real german engineering”, generally known as outstanding craftsmanship, then the UK Mitsu Evo FQ400, with a 400bhp 2 liter engine, it’s alien tehnology…by this asociation, in this commercial, I think V-dub made a fool of itself.
Someone here said something about Veyron…well, I’ll tell you some things about that car…to manufacture one, just one, it costs 5 million euro (!!!), and they sell it for 1.8 million…the tires only are priced as this V-dub is…so, good business they’ve made…let’s say it’s just a marketing tool and profit doesn’t count, I’ll go with this…but, how about that top speed of 250 mph? Well, there is a tricky part…normaly, the car reaches about 230 mph..if you want to exceed 250, you must prepare the car by inserting the contect key in a special place…then, when you start, you must NOT brake, if you do, the car will get itself out of that special setup and you’re back to nil…and, on top of that, there is no SAFE public place in the wolrd to reach 250 mph, so the only place you can do it is in Germany, on a special desgined track for this car…so, you may do all that stuff they say with Veyron, but you actually can’t…
For all that much trouble and over 2 million $ spent, I’ll rather have an Enzo(if I’m an old rich fart) or a Nismo tuned 500hp GT-R34 (if I’m young and troublesome)…
Same with this car…GTI ment something in Europe until Mk4 Golf…now, it’s suppose to be a sports car, but hhmmm.. it kinda isn’t.

Well, i work for a company that develops electric components for the car…and Nissan, Kia and Hyundai are our costumers..today you can’t say, german engineering, or japs engineering…a car is developed in so many countries…
So, i look for the Design…and japs cars are mostly very very ugly…Sorry Dude…

These ads are great! VW makes a fine automobile, although I prefer my ‘05 Solara! I absolutely hate the side ways ball cap wearing losers driving around old Civics, MR2s, and Eclipses with bad paint jobs, lousy stereos, and ugly women in the passenger seat. You guys get all upset when a clever ad is popular. Here’s an idea, get a real job (delivering chinesse food doesn’t count) quit spending your money on stupid after market parts that make your car look retarded (trust me if it looked that good it would have come from the factory that way!), and get a life that includes more than your dumb looking pile of junk! While you’re at it, move out of your parents basement, and set the sensitivity on your alarm down a few notches because it really bothers hard working people when it gets triggered in the middle of the night, no one wants your crappy car anyway!

The only people who don’t appreciate these commercials are the people who drive the hunks of **** they demolish! It’s truly amusing to watch them throw tantrums. I actually drive an unmodified honda, and it still beats out those tricked out cars owned by those fools that saw the fast and the furious one too many times. (Note: Not only did that movie look pathetic, the latest installment in this series looked even worse! I had to endure it when I saw V for Vendetta, and when that preview was on, I couldn’t help but laugh even harder than I usually do thanks to these commercials.)

VW ads are so funny. Its definately time to unpimp those rides. I’d buy a VW but they’re too expensive so i settle for Honda. Cool cars. GTi is better than BMW 3 series. Whilst many hate the Germans for past actions, they still make the best cars.

Oh snap! I could watch these videos all day. It gets more hilarious every time I watch it. If you don’t like these commercials either you have one of these lame, sucking pimped rides, or you’re German. Germans don’t like it because: 1) They don’t have a sense of humor, 2) It’s making fun of their accent, and 3) It’s making fun of the American perception of Germans. I know cause my wife is German, and she hates it. I wish they would make some more of these commercials!

Ich war als Junge immer sehr schüchtern und traute mich nie andere Mädchen anzusprechen! Deshalb hatte ich auch nie eine Freundin, um mich aber trotzdem zu befriedigen, schaute ich mir immer Pornos an!
In meiner Arbeit als Lehrer gab es durchaus Frauen, die ich reizend fand, ich glaubte aber, mich wolle keine! Da ich auch eine sehr feuchte Aussprache hatte und nicht so lässig angezogen war und meistens nach Scheiß roch, gab es wenige, die sich für mich interessierten!
Irgendwann dachte ich mir, jetzt möchte ich auch mal mein erstes Mal haben! Also ging ich mit ein paar Freunden in den nahegelegenen Puff. Es war eine schöne Stimmung und die Girls liebten mich (dachte ich), als eine mit mir aufs Zimmer ging und mir die Hose ausgezogen hatte, sagte ich ihr gleich, dass dies mein erstes Mal seien würde. Sie glaubte mir aber nicht und legte sofort los! Ich spritzte vier Mal ab. Es war nicht so schön, aber ich hatte es hinter mir! Die Frau die mich entjungferte, hatte den Namen Gerlinde! Danke!

VW is thee most popular car in the world. For many reasons.
I have owned and worked on VWs for 22 years and they are a gift to this planet and its people. American cars suck beyond description and most of their owners are just as bad.
The TDI that I drive will do over 110 MPH and gets about 38 MPG ,its a station wagon and Im not afraid or embarrased to drive a 100 with my kids in the car. It kicks ass.
TDI racing is the future.
Ever heard of DAKAR?? you wouldnt survive it but VW does pretty damn good.

I don’t mind American hot rods if they are done with some kind of intelligent thought. I’ve seen very well done formidable looking James Dean (1940s?) style cars on Vancouver roads.I’d probably buy a new Ford T-Bird because it is such a clean design. Also C&D mag or something had an article about some guy making very cleanly finished ‘32 Ford type roadsters. Quite pricey cars but something I would consider buying. The new Mustang idea is a good idea. I think GM is putting out a new old school looking Camaro. Back to Vee Dub;anybody who can look at what Volkswagen did with their camperized Westphalia(colours,designs,textiles,workmanship,etc.)and call that van crap, is a creepy racist person.

Upon closer inspection the (camperized) Westphalia is a design masterwork.

I don’t actually have time to watch TV because of the impending collapse of the planet among other things, and thinking about the fact that I may miss an introspective German car ad doesn’t make the decision easier.

To:’NINE’,If you walk around with a sheet of paper and numbers on it(specs), who will care? A British company(TVR)was making roadsters that were similar in appearance to a Triumph Spitfire. The TVR had problems something like windows leaking or not rolling up. Concerns with the trunk opening without a tool…just a long list of goofy problems. You had to carry an assortment of odd devices in your pocket just to make it to where ever and back, but to look at the car, the construction materials, handcrafted feel, etc; THAT would make people want to own it; myself included, and I am rigid and unforgiving as hell as far as quality standards go.

Myles, I was throwing that idea around in my head;what if VW decided to produce original earlier models like the Rabbit A1 and sell them again? People would buy those cars like hotcakes! Other companies, as well…GM or Ford could re-issue exact original copies of super old style pick-up trucks.40s 50s,etc. Most of today’s pick-up trucks look like the designers are on acid.

Commercials are aimed at specific demographics. These are not aimed at the kid with the ridiculous slammed jap car. They’re aimed at the person that thinks the kids slammed jap car is ridiculous.That being said, these commercials are just plain funny! As far as engineering goes I have owned Jap made cars, U.S. made and one VW. The VW is one of the finest and I fully expect to get 300,000 plus miles out of my tdi jetta.

I wrecked my 97 VW passat (wolfsburg edtion) in december 4 days b4 christmas. It was my dream car i always wanted a VW but really a passat but now that i wrecked it i cant pay it off to sell it, so im gonna part it out. it literally almost brings tears to my eyes that was my dream car but what happens happens. so the only thing that is wrong is that the frame is bent and the ac was broke in the accident. Abner’s point is somewhat valid…how wretched and sad, I have to say, how poor some people are…in dire need of a set of wheels…MTV has usually been a quite nifty and happening magnetic place, especially with the old school VJs (Blackwood, Kennedy, etc). What if you modified your format. Be insane and replace the pimp show with THIS ‘unpimp’ format. Your “pimped” cars” will have a very limited life span, right?! I mean how long will they drive those cars? Why not get those pimp show guys to find a needy person or group and give them a brand new VW Rabbit or Polo. THAT car will last twenty years minimum. Spike Lee would probably approve and your credibility would go through the roof.

One of the Prince Charles’ sons ‘cherry picked’ (chose based strictly on pleasure/enjoyment regardless of price) a Volkswagen Golf as his own personal car for himself to drive. well the only good thing about the VW commercials is that the chick is funny and hot.
