VW to boost Chinese investments

10/19/2007, 8:34 AM

By Drew Johnson

Volkswagen has announced that it will boost R&D spending on its joint-venture with China’s Shanghai Auto. The German automaker has already spent $400 million on its Chinese research facilities in preparation for the launch of all-new models. The first cars produced by the joint-venture will bow next year.

“The model is mainly designed in China by Shanghai-Volkswagen, but it will still carry the Volkswagen brand,” a VW spokesperson said.

Volkswagen is also planning to export the vehicles to Europe and the U.S. in the future, although the automaker failed to mention a time frame.

At least if VW builds its garbage in China it will have an understandable excuse for its crappy quality.

lol @ Ricardo

So Porsche buys the majority of audi from VW, and VW focuses on what they do best- cheapening thier product line. Sounds good to me.

VW has big marketshare in China, just look at the Taxicabs and they are Jettas. Sure American are bitter about all the Chinese product recalls, but it’s undeniable the potential of the Chinese auto industry. Unfortunately, Chinese law require joint venture with a Chinese company before any automaker can sell car in China. Much of these R&D is for China only, and I am glad it’s that way. They can’t steal the latest Euro VW technology if the Chinese company never knows what it is.

China is a big enough market that none of the big companies (VW, GM, Toyota, etc.) want to ignore. Until they start shipping cars from China here, you all should just calm down.
