Sure American are bitter about all the Chinese product recalls, but it's undeniable the potential of the Chinese auto industry. Unfortunately, Chinese law require joint venture with a Chinese company before any automaker can sell car in China. Much of these R&D is for China only, and I am glad it's that way. They can't steal the latest Euro VW technology if the Chinese company never knows what it is. China is a big enough market that none of the big companies (VW, GM, Toyota, etc.) want to ignore.
