VW to borrow Porsche Panamera platform for premium offering

09/04/2009, 4:17 PM

By Drew Johnson

Volkswagen’s board may have voted to ax the Panamera from Porsche’s lineup, but the four-door coupe’s platform will see duty in at least one of VW’s other brands – either Bentley, Bugatti or Audi – before riding off into the sunset next decade.

According to Edmunds, VW has decided to share the Panamera’s platform with one of its premium brands. Although the Panamera platform would seem like a perfect candidate for a production version of the Lamborghini Estoque four-door coupe, and inside source says the Panamera architecture will not underpin any future Lamborghini models.

That leaves the door open for Bentley, Bugatti or Audi. Bentley could us the Panamera platform for the next-generation of the Continental GT, but it is believed Bentley is eyeing one of Audi’s aluminum platforms to save on weight. The Panamera is also much lower than the current Continental GT.

Bugatti has yet to decide on its next production model, but the Panamera could sway the decision making process. One of the models Bugatti is considering is a high-performance four-door coupe, which would fit the Panamera mold to a T.

Audi is also in the running for a Panamera-based model, but with a number of similar vehicles in production or in the pipeline, it seems very unlikely that the German automaker would get the nod.

No word on when the new Panamera-based model might bow, but expect it well ahead of the Porsche Panamera’s demise date of 2017.

$130k is too expensive for a Porsche but also too cheap for a Bugatti.
The Panamera reminds me of a Ford Taurus wagon. Therefore, it should be killed along with all of its technology.
If I was in the market for a super luxurious sedan, I wouldn’t even take a glance at the Bugatti sedan because it would share a platform with a failed car. Why do I think Panamera will fail? It’s $130k. I could get a Mercedes AMG or Maserati nicely equipped at that price. It’s been discontinued before the first one’s even been delivered. And of course, it’s terribly ugly.
Porsche should have stuck to making sports cars. They should have spent money on a Carrera GT successor instead of SUV’s and sedans.

Lamborghini could use it to make a new GT car to fight the DB9, M6, etc. and use some of the Estoque’s design on it.

Porsche has difficulties breaking into new designs due to its customer/fan-base, making vehicles like the Panamera and Cayenne difficult for them to sell compared to other companies. The 928 and 944 “flopped” because it wasn’t what the Porsche majority wanted to see, it wasn’t 911-like. Sure there are people that like the “odd” Porsche designs but let’s face it there aren’t enough of them walking into dealerships and laying down the cash.

Now funny story just for you beatus, since you have young daughter. When my daughter was about 4-5 she came to me and asked “papa, what’s fagot?”. The first reaction of course – lets go ask mommy; but after look on mommy’s face, I said lets read dictionary. Thanks got Webster described fagot as a stick or bunch of sticks tied together.

Porsche is really taking it hard on this one. They spent more on developing this car than any car in its. history. Sure, many think it is ugly, but the fact remains that it performs like no other luxury sedan. In other words, like a Porsche.

I think VW and company are enjoying making Porsche pay for its earlier indescretions. When they cancelled the Panamara, I knew that the platform would soon be snatched up to make future VWs, Audis, or Bentleys. The tech is just too good. Not only did VW in essence get to buy back all its shares for pennies, it also inherited the most profitable car company in the world AND recieved a high tech, top of the line performance sedan platform. As a company, Porsche it no doubt crying its eyes out on this one.

I just worry that VW will take it too far and ruin the future development of its high performance sports cars. The Cayanne and the future Panamara were likely to make up a good percentage of Porsches profits, allowing them to continue to make the good stuff such as the Cayman and the 911 variants.
