Volkswagen says that it is planning to build electric cars in the world’s largest and fastest-growing market in as little as two years.
By 2013, the automaker’s chief Chinese executive anticipates that the company will be assembling vehicles that are propelled exclusively by electric power in China.
Karl-Thomas Neumann, VW’s China unit CEO, told reporters at the auto show in Guangzhou that the cars will be capable of a 100 to 200 kilometer range, or about 60 to 120 miles. It’s not clear just what platform VW will use for its Chinese-market EVs, although the company has shown an EV version of its Chinese-market Lavida sedan.
VW builds cars with two partners in China and it imports some from other countries. The Lavida is built in Shanghai by a VW-SAIC joint-venture. It shares its basic platform with cars like the North American-market Jetta, but it features unique styling and different powertrains than those sold in this market.
