VW to build next-generation Golf Cabrio in-house

05/22/2008, 5:08 PM

By Drew Johnson

Karmann has built more than 600,000 Golf Cabriolets for Volkswagen over the past few decades, but the German automaker will reportedly pull its contract with Karmann starting in 2010. From 2010 onwards, VW plans to produce the Golf Cabrio in-house.

According to Germany’s Handelsblatt, VW will build its own Golf Cabrio starting with the next-generation car, but it remains unclear where the automaker will produce the new model.

Earlier this year, Audi announced that Karmann will no longer be building its A4 convertible, although Karmann will begin building the company’s A3 Cabrio later this year. Karmann has also recently inked a deal with BMW to produce its 1-series convertible through 2013.

No Raineman, the next Golf Cabrio will have a cloth hood and be very similar to the just released Audi A3 Convertible. It will come at a lower price point than the Eos

Either way, the United States will never see it, though one could hope the A3 gets the 2 liter turbodiesel.

I’m sure there is a lot of alternative lifestyle people who will want this car, along with 50 year old women.

I hope they build a lot of them in white, because that’s the official sorority girl color.

VW grows balls. The best specimen of their cars came for Karmann. We’ll see what they’ll sell.
