"Don't worry, go ahead and buy your GTi. I guarantee you, even a 100 hp diesel drives like a funeral procession. "

Horsepower is almost irrelevant with diesels. Torque is really the only thing that matters with a diesel. Although they didn't publish the torque figure in this article, I'm sure it will be at least 200-250 lbs/ft. While not as fast as a GTi, it won't be slow, either.

I rode in a co-worker's 98 Jetta TDI, with 90hp. You would think with only 90hp the thing would barely be able to move at all. Yet it is surprisingly peppy - you would never guess it is only 90hp, and that's because of all the torque that it has. He regularly gets over 50 mpg on the highway with it, while acceleration is on par with a 4-cylinder Accord or Camry of that period.

I've owned a VW before, and it was no Beetle.

This is all I have to say to VW:

I got some "motion" right here for you VW.

I thought they were going to call it TDI instead of blue whatever?

And AWD would be stupid in a 105 hp economy car.

Will they sell these in the States? If not, why not? I drove a clean-diesel Renault Megane from Avis on a visit to the UK a few months ago that got 51 MPG! Great car!

Yeah, the blues sound high-tech, but it's anchored to the product somewhat. I believe Mercedes named theirs Bluetec, because the urea blend that ends up getting squirted into the engine was actually blue. BluRay same thing, the laser light is blue. I'm assuming that VW's version still requires urea injection. I know some companies are developing bluetec-like mpg without the need for urea injection, but those aren't near production, I didn't think.

BTW, when they say "low resistance wheels and tires" they mean 13" pizzacutters with 165 rubber. No thanks.

Sounds like GM's "Ultralight" concept from the early 1990's (i think). It was a a car made of carbon fiber and had a 100 horsepower engine that, with utterly flawless aerodymnics, got 100 mpg. The car cost a million dollars to build and would have cost nearly $100k to produce. It also looked like an egg.

But this VW sounds like yet another engineering cop-out: build a dinkier car so it can get better f/econ but is as much fun to drive as a run down Yugo. What they need, if they are going to keep burning gas, is build better engines than the old stand-by internal combustion.

Adiabatic engines, which use waste heat to to increase power and fuel efficiency (circa-1983 prototypes got 150hp and 60 mpg), is one option. Then there's the StarRotor, a sophistication of the Adiabatic Engine, far simpler but does the same things and performs at least as well. GM also, through Opel developed a couple of compact sports that use diesel engines, to propel this swift and agile little cars to speed over 150mph while getting over 100mpg.

I want something new not just dinkier. Something bold and challenging not safe and sissy.

Oh, "Greentec" and the like would likely be too cliché and possibly political. Blue sounds high tech and trendy.
