VW to market two Polo variants in U.S.
By Drew JohnsonFollowing in the footsteps of its Japanese rivals, Volkswagen has announced it will sell two version of its Polo in the United States. Like the Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris, VW will market sedan and hatchback versions on the Polo in the U.S.
However, the hatchback model destined to be sold in the U.S. will not be identical to the new Polo model that graced the VW stage at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Instead, the U.S.-variant will be larger to better gel with American buyers.“It’s more like a cross between a compact minivan and a hatchback,” VW CEO Stefan Jacoby told Automotive News of the U.S. model. “In other words, it’s more like the Honda Fit.”
In addition to the five-door hatchback, a sedan version of the Polo will also be offered in the States. Jacoby says the Polo sedan will be smaller than the Jetta, and should also steer clear of the larger sedan’s price tag.
In order to keep prices down, VW will likely build its U.S. Polos at its Puebla, Mexico production plant. Although VW has yet to announce official pricing for the Polo, look for both models to list in the $13,000 to $15,000 range. If all goes as planned, the Polo will be in U.S. VW showrooms in 2011.
