VW to offer hybrids for all future models

09/24/2007, 11:18 AM

By Drew Johnson

Volkswagen will offer all future models with a hybrid option, finds a new report. “Future VW models will fundamentally also be constructed with hybrid concepts,” VW head of development Ulrich Hackenberg said. Hackenberg also revealed that a version of the recently unveiled Up! Concept – scheduled to start production in 2011 — will be offered in hybrid and possibly even all-electric variants.

Hackenberg also told Automobilwoche that VW will offer a BlueMotion — the name of VW’s environmentally friendly diesel line — version of Tiguan SUV and that there is a “good chance” the Eos hardtop convertible would be offered with the BlueMotion technology. Eventually, Volkswagen plans to expand BlueMotion throughout its entire lineup.

Hackenberg said VW would continue with “further innovative fuel consumption measures” within the next few years.

With rising gas prices and stricter proposed emissions regulations — both in the U.S. and abroad — many automakers are looking to new technologies to increase mileage and reduce CO2 emissions. While hybrids have been available in the U.S. for some time, it looks as though new, clean diesels — which offer excellent fuel economy, durability and good performance — could be the future of green vehicles.

They could put in an engine that runs on distilled water, and I’d still need to see three straight years of improved JD Powers numbers. The cars look great, but every VW owner I know is practically in tears half the time over the quality xxxxups.

What a dumb idea. Hybrids do not offer any improved fuel mileage over diesels and suck on highway gas mileage. Hypebrids is more like it.

Err, Toyota lol! ITs funny how car companies trade engines, the Saturn Vue with it’s Honda MDX counterpart, and Toyota/VW back and forth with small diesels for smal petrols.

That’s exactly what VW needs – vehicles that are MORE complicated. They can’t properly engineer the ones they’ve been selling for years.
