VW to use Brooke Shields in Routan ads

09/11/2008, 8:53 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Volkswagen has announced that ads promoting the upcoming Routan minivan – which was designed and developed in cooperation with Chrysler – will feature actress and model Brooke Shields. The Routan, which will be in dealerships beginning today and tomorrow, will be marketed to higher-income couples seeking more style in their practical van purchases, a Volkswagen spokesperson said.

Shields will apparently play a mock “serious” spokesperson for the brand who says that high birth rates are caused by couples who want to buy a Routan but believe that they must have children to purchase the van. The ad can be found on YouTube.

Volkswagen will also be launching a Web campaign later in the month that will allow users to make “virtual Routan babies” they can share via social networking sights like MySpace or Facebook.

I think the ad is quite funny as it touts the superiority of German engineering, etc., yet the damn thing is nothing but a Chrysler Town & Country. I cannot think of anything further from German engineering than Chrysler engineering!

They should have used Rosie O’Donnell. She already knows what it’s like to live with a big box.

This will probably be the most reliable trouble-free item in VW’s product line. Sad but true. Now there’s a marketing slogan in there somewhere:

“Style of a VW with the durability of a Chrysler”?

“… will use”? The ads broke over the weekend of September 6-7. Saw them on Fox and elsewhere.

Next bulletins from LLN: Daimler divorces Chrysler… new Camaro due soon… gas prices on the rise…

Brooke Shields is the whitest woman in America.
But she looks good in those spots.
I’d still prefer the T&C.
