American billionaire Warren Buffett says he’s “behind GM 100%” and he even bought one of their cars to prove it. Buffett decided to buy a Cadillac DTS after seeing GM CEO Rick Wagoner on CBS’s Face the Nation in early April. He faxed Wagoner a note that praised him for being “candid, composed, and rational” in his discussion of problems GM faced.

How is this a publicity stunt? Since when has Warren Buffet ever done cheap marketing gimmicks?
He bought this Cadillac with his own money, without being asked or consulting with GM. He simply chose out of his own free will to replace the aging Lincoln he has been driving.

He faxed Wagoner a note that praised him for being “candid, composed, and rational” in his discussion of problems GM faced that weren’t of his making, and added a P.S.: “I don’t buy cars very often, but the next one will be a Cadillac.”
Wagoner wrote back offering to help Buffett with the purchase, but it wasn’t necessary. Buffett dispatched his daughter to a nearby dealer so that he could, as he put it, “cast one vote for the guy.” She picked out a DTS–a sedan that is the model of choice for senior-citizen drivers and starts at $41,990. “I think I’ll become a car salesman, because I would have no trouble selling this car to anyone,” Buffett says. “I’m behind GM 100%.” In case you were wondering, he paid cash.”

Publicity stunt? Why are we only hearing about it almost 2 months later?

Impressive (rolling my eyes). A man with a net worth of $43 Billion (thats 43 followed by 9 zeros, billion with a “B”) purchasing a car worth 43K is not much of a statement. That is 1/1 Millionth of his net worth. That is like taking the 72K I make a year and splurging on a $0.07 cent piece of candy. Quite literaly a drop in the bucket for him. Want to show support Warren, buy a whole fleet of cars for your extended family including children, nephews, nieces, grandkids. Or fund a Chevy-based NASCAR team. Or offer to invest in new manufacturing technology.

Hey #9 do you know what Buffets license plate says?
THRIFTY so buying a new car is a big deal.
“Despite his immense wealth, Buffett is famous for his unpretentious and frugal lifestyle. He continues to live in the same house in Omaha he bought in 1957 for $31,500. His chairman’s salary from Berkshire Hathaway of $100,000 per annum is extremely modest by corporate American standards.”

For someone who dines at dairy Queen, drives little, and believes he can sell me a Caddy … try and convince those who have been failed by GM, and their are many, that this should reassure them that all should be forgotten and forgiven.
And don’t give that **** about him being loaded, blah, blah, blah.
The B.S. that monkey above delivers re: the red, white and blue is nonsense. Hey, anyone coming to the rescue for the States is welcome news, eh monkey?

Having firsthand experience with GM products in the 80s (dad had a 1980 Seville and I had a 1982 Trans Am) I can honestly say that my experience turned me off to GM for a very long time. These 2 cars spent more time at the dealer’s repair shop within a 4 year period than the 8 cars I’ve owned since 1985 combined. However, GM cars have improved in leaps and bounds and I’m even considering giving GM another change (’06 GTO 6 speed). The new Caddies may not be anywhere near MB S-class or BMW 760 levels, but since they cost a fraction of what the Germans do, nobody should expect them to compete mano a mano either.

You can’t compare a $100k car to a $41k car. Might as well compare a bicycle to a skateboard. The MB and BMW cost more because they cost more to build, engineer, parts, everything radar cruise control all the tech goodies. Eventually Cadillac will have a competitor to the LS class, S-class, and 7-Series. Compare an STS to a 5-Series. Cost is close and they are true competitors.

You guys just don’t get it! Cadillacs should cost as much as those cars and should compete tete a tete. Reducing the price of a crap product so it doesn’t compete with anything else is a lame way of getting out of competition, it’s the same excuse as to why the corvette isn’t as good as a 911 because it costs so much less. Please tell me with what does this car compete exactly?

whoa where to start? cadillac dont have to increase the price of their cars to compete with bmw and mb really someone who buys either of them has to much money and dont really know what to do with it mercedes hasnt made a good looking car since the 53 gull wing cadillacs are not the prettiest cars on the block and no near as fugly as a mb and man dont get me going on a bmw ultimate driving machine my ass more like ultimate marketing concept that for some reason some people believe i seen the 911 mentioned porsche had to learn the hard way that pushing the $$ appeal or snob factor doesnt last for long and had to go back to the performance side again i think they wwere down to 500 or 5000 units sold in north america before thay decided to rethink their strategy as for the vette saying it dont compete uh your not paying attention some models of the vette blow the doors off supercars at half the cost read a review on one or two or 3 thhey all usually come to the same conclusion world class car at a decent price
