Weak SUV demand, MINI push BMW sales down

09/01/2006, 2:31 PM

By admin

The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI brands combined) reported a decrease of 11 percent in August sales for 25,673 vehicles over the 28,879 vehicles reported in 2005. Sales of BMW brand vehicles dropped 12 percent in August for a total of 22,421 compared to 25,537 reported in the same month a year ago. MINI USA reported August sales of 3,252 automobiles, down 11 percent from the 3,342 cars sold in August 2005. BMW’s sales were hurt mostly by weak demand for SUVs, down 35 percent in August to
5,368 vehicles over the 8,283 sold last August. [data sheet]

I’m sure the numbers will take off again once the new 3 coupe is fully available…

funny that a performance car company would have lower sales due to poor(er) SUV sales.

It *is*, only it comes at a price, of course. Ups and downs in this business are natural, so I’m confident BMW will post better sales sooner or later.

Who would by an X5 now??? There is a brand new one around the corner. This will come back up.

I think this summer was hard on all the manufacturers.

I don’t get it! the % change in sales is on the Daily Selling Rate and not on overall sales numbers, Why?

The SUVs are all on que for a refresh, its there on the BMW USA website. Not to mention the 3 coupe. Considering new Mini, 3 coupe, 3 convertible, X5, X3 are all in the wings for launch, this August is no real surprise. 3 coupe is going to make a killing.

Runflats and i-drive push BMWs sales down.

“Runflats and i-drive push BMWs sales down.”

Yeah, that’s it. Moron.

You have to put the numbers in context. August 2006 isn’t just out there on its own. What happened in 2005 (and 2004) can impact sales gains and losses. Supply issues or, as johnny detailed, new models waiting in the wings.

There’s the winding down of the E46 coupe and the ramping up of the E92. There’s the SUV situation, both the sinking feeling across the industry and the new models in the wings for BMW (refreshed X3, all-new X5). There’s the 7-Series getting its ass handed to it by the new Merc S-Class. Though its not feeling the pain anywhere near as bad as the Lexus LS (which has a new model coming, too…), Jag XJ, or Audi A8.

Runflats and iDrive have been a part of BMW for years. It’s not as though, in one month, everyone suddenly woke up to the fact.

Mini’s appeal to a young audience that can’t afford them. Make a basic Mini that can be bought for 15,000 and have the ability to add options and watch the money come in. =)

Mini’s sales are down because a) production is down (plant closing in early August, etc) and b) they just unveiled the all-new 2007. Sales of just about any car take a dip in the months before a redesign. See the Infiniti G35, Acura MDX, or hell…the BMW X5.

And a lot of cars appeal to a young audience that can’t afford them. Porsche, Aston Martin, Ferrari…

It could be the housing market slump & the strong Euro. No more pulling equity out out of the house and adding a bimmer in the driveway. Prices are up. It’s a tough nut to buy one outright or finance one.

well mini sales are down only because they stopped production for a cuople of months at plant oxford for a refit to build the 2007 mini

I agree, with the new X5 as well as the awesome 3 coupe BMW sales should skyrocket as the year closes out. As of this week I will be placing my order for the new X5 so there’s at least one sale for Nov. already.

you obviously have never owned a BMW, otherwise you would know that you don’t have to see it in person to know it’s a quality vehicle. Besides, i like the idea of being one of the first to have something
