Wealthy call Porsche most prestigious brand

04/18/2006, 7:54 AM

By admin

America’s wealthy rated Porsche the most prestigious luxury automobile for 2006 in an independent survey released by the New York-based Luxury Institute. Porsche led the field on brand uniqueness and exclusivity, being the brand most driven by people who are admired and respected, and making customers feel special across the entire experience. Lexus, which won handily on superior quality, continued to climb in luxury status, displacing BMW, which came in fourth. Importantly, Lexus was also the brand that most aware wealthy consumers are willing to refer. The survey looked at households with a minimum of $200,000 in gross annual income. If anyone was wondering, the official rankings were:

1) Porsche
2) Mercedes-Benz
3) Lexus
4) BMW

Article doesn’t seem to list any others, but you can find it here in PDF form:

Amazingly:

Bentley
Rolls-Royce
Ferrari
Lamborghini
Maybach
Mercedes-Benz
Aston-Martin

Aren’t anywhere in the top 4.

You would think that one of these brands, or at least Bentley would be up there, in terms of the most ‘prestigious brand’. The Boxster is nice, but hardly ‘prestigious’ by any stretch of the imagination. A $420,000 Bentley Azure Convertible is PRESTIGIOUS.

Now I like Porsches, don’t get me wrong, but I think that most “aware” rich buyers would think the interiors downright dull. Perhaps a nice DB9 would suit you better with a center console found nowhere else.

A rebradged Toyota with no soul is not prestigious. It is commodity.

Nothing against the other 3 in the top 4, but frankly, aren’t all 4 of them rather, well, erm, common?

As Jon pointed out, there are quite a few very prestigious brands for only “wealthy”. Very, very few people can purchase a Bentley. With today’s credit joke, nearly anyone can get a Mercedes. They might get it repo’ed, but hey.

For a brand of cars to be considered truly prestigious it need to stand on its own.

All of the brands listed below have been reduced to nothing but glorified “designer” cars that share as much content as possible with the downmarket products of their parent companies. Although the cars from these brands today may be much better built than the “real” ones that were avaiable 20 years ago they sorely lack in the unique brand qualities that made them special in the past. If I wanted the feeling of VW’s W12 I would buy a Pheaton. If I wanted to look a audi switch gear I would buy an Audi. etc.

A Porsche is still a Porsche, a Ferrari is still a Ferrari, but a Lamborghini is an Audi, and a Bentley is a VW. That is not prestigious.

Bentley: in name only (VW)
Rolls-Royce: in name only (BMW)
Lamborghini: in name only (Audi)
Maybach: an MB marketing joke, that one got!
Aston-Martin: in name only (Ford)

Chris G the porsche 911 turbo and most other 911 turbos are all wheel drive, when you live in canada you need all wheel drive, people who drive aston’s drive them a few days out of the year. porsche should be the most prestigious daily driver with other marques ahead of it.

Lars Ulrich?”Things Go Better With Satan” Ulrich? How droll.Metallica and their entire body of work has gone the way of the dodo.As of yet you dweebs have not shown yourself to be anything other than out of touch vociferous brain dead Philistines.Look at Rolling Stones’ ‘Gimme Shelter’ and The Who’s ‘Eminence Front’.Both songs untouched by time, but both groups have a degree of sophistication and intelligence to what they do.I believe both bands actually wore ties and jackets in concert at certain times during their musical oddessey.
