Natural gas-powered engine maker Westport Innovations has just made a deal with General Motors to develop a natural gas engine technology for light-duty vehicles. With this move, it seems GM plans to follow the likes of Honda with its natural gas-powered Civic and Ram's 2500 Heavy Duty pickup due out later this year.

Earlier in June, Westport also teamed up with Caterpillar to build engines for mining trucks and locomotives that use cheaper natural gas rather than diesel. Natural gas is not only cheaper to purchase but it also pollutes less than either gasoline or diesel fuel. It makes less nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and greenhouse gases.

This is Westport and GM's second deal, with the first announced last June, the AutoNews report continued. The companies are developing two different combustion, controls, and emissions approaches to natural gas engines.

Natural gas engines, such as the one in the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Ram pickup, are sometimes supplemented by smaller gasoline tanks, with the engines capable of running on either. Finding CNG could also prove troublesome, as only about 1,500 fuel stations offer it.
