What does Ford have planned for the next Ranger?

03/03/2006, 4:13 PM

A new Ford Ranger designed specifically for the Thai market will be officially unveiled later this month, according to Edmunds. However, this model will not come to the U.S. market, the report says. A Ford official admitted that the the Thai Ranger is “much better” than the U.S. version currently on sale. However, the source also said Ford had no plans to update the Ranger in the United States. Pictured right is a spy shot of the new Thai Ranger, which is based heavily on the 4-Trac Concept shown late last year. Last week, we cited an MPH report indicating Ford would kill the Ranger line entirely in the U.S. in 2008. Based on both reports, we suspect Ford might kill off the Ranger nameplate in the U.S., and replace it with an entirely new pickup. However, the MPH report suggested that the market for small pickups was shrinking, and a replacement might not be needed.

just like the European Focus, and the Mondeo.

Excellent cars that get rave reviews but never come to the U.S.

I seriously think Ford has issues with evaluating demand…

Like GM, Ford’s US brass subscribe to the “we didn’t design it so we don’t want it” mentality, and so most of the better and more clever international Ford and GM products pass the US market by.

Instead we get more of “The Best Explorer Ever”, Freestars, Azteks, Envoy XLs and whatever other mediocre crap they think the American public will buy even though at the same time Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, etc. sell more and more..

Brilliant mindset guys..

Amazing… Only Ford can take another of the U.S.’s best selling nameplates in history and mismanage it soooo badly that it’s no longer viable. Ranger, Taurus, Escort, and likely soon, Focus. All within about 10 year’s time too…

I hope they teach this in business schools one day, because this degree of brand mismangement on such a visible corporate level is really one for the record books.
