What is the Mercedes CLC-Class?

12/19/2006, 6:15 PM

By admin

Back in May, we uncovered a trademark filing made by DaimlerChrysler for the Mercedes “CLC-Class.” The name was registered early that month, and was published for opposition seven days ago — on December 12th, 2006. As expected, the filing covers “automobiles and their structural parts.”

It’s not clear what the CLC-Class is, or when — if ever — it will come to market, but the name suggests a few different possibilities. The name could conceivably refer to a two-door version of the CLS “coupe,” or it could refer to a CL convertible.

A two-door CLS would likely be priced the same as its four-door counterpart — with prices starting around $67,000. That would position between the $47,000 CLK and the $100,000 CL-Class. Alternatively, the CLC might be a drop-top version of the CL-Class coupe. In September, Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reported Mercedes was working on such a car. Stay tuned…

How about Mercedes works on its current, already enormous line-up to ensure that they become again “engineered like no other car in the world.”

Way, WAY too many models already!!! I mean, we are all huge car fans, and even WE get confused! Stop the madness and just go back to C, E, S, SL, M and maybe SLK and CLS.

Actually, I take that back. Even if it’s gorgeous, scrap the CLS and keep the CL. That should cover all the bases quite nicely.

I think the idea of an S-Class convertible doesn’t make sense, and I know MB is considering it , but what really boggles my mind is if they were going to come out w/ a new convertible, why not a convertible CL class? I mean, in CL600/CL63AMG/CL65 AMG guise it would be an alternative to the Bentley Continental GTC, like that seems to me as the OBVIOUS car to make a convertible, a big, stylish coupe, as opposed to a big, stylish…4 door..

man, IMO Mercedes-benz has to many models, I assume that this is going to be a CL convertable, something to compete with the Bentley GTC and the Aston DB9 volante a CLS convertable is to close to a CLK and an S-class convertable just doesn’t seem to make sense to me.

i was just thinking that Mercedes-Benz is not really diluting their brand because a lot of their cars are based on cars that they already made. Think about it they create a new lineup that practically costed them no money in research and development. And on top of that they were making good profit on their older cars and recently Benz prices have been skyrocketing. Every car they sell is practically pure profit. All of their cars are designed for a sector of a market that they do not have and that would create self-cannibalization. If you think about it they only make three different types of cars despite the fact that they have at least 15 different classes

Evolve Mercedes into a more upmarket brand to compete with Bentley/Maserati. Do this by –

Killing A,B,GLK,CLK,ML and any car in the pipe line.

Take all passengers cars up a level so -

C-CLASS off into Executive against 5 series.

E-CLASS, CLS, GL, SL into Large Executive against Bently Continental Flying Spur & GT, Effectively replacing the S-Class as Executive

S-CLASS, CL, SLR, G-Wagon handbuilt from the finest material to take on the Bentley Arnage and Aston Martin equivalant directly and taking the S-class to a new level.

Have one extendible platform for all the cars apart from C-class. Share C-class platform with Chrysler Imperial.

GMrules, you are confusing.

Uh-huh. right………… Dream on bud. Cadillacs approach has been rebadging or copying an existing car like a Buick or Chevy Tahoe and adding chrome, charging 30% markup and getting the NB and rap artists to back it up. As if those guys know what the hell a camshaft ot Differential is. Cadillac could rebadge a Yugo, slap some 22’s on it and a chrome dash and the rap world would eat the thing up. Too bad outside that world, Cadillac represents gussied up Tahoes and glorified Lucernes. Or grandpa sedans with wire wheels, carriage roofs and curb feelers.

wow…GMRules…you are crazy…mercedes should follow cadillac?….WTF? mercedes is a top-tier luxury brand, cadillac has turned into the lets re-tag chevy models and charge 10g’s more…the funny thing is with all of mercedes models…theres not a one where another chrysler brand is making an identical one…(the maybach looks familiar…but the interior is ridicously different)…GM is destroying cadillac they are trying to turn the brand into a younger one…and that’s not what the company is…

so i agree with GMRules…let’s all start building the S-Klasse on the same line as the PT Cruiser….reminiscent of the Suburban/Yukon/Escalade line in Irving, TX….thats smart ;)

Mercedes has and always will be **** next to Cadillac and Buick. Sorry, that is just the way it goes. Pretty soon, Caddy will be standing alone, with no competition because everyone will have realized that overpriced German **** is just that. Overpriced German crap.

Actually the new Malibu will wipe the floor with this pile of ****, the Cadillac would stomp the hell out of it. Mercedes could only dream of being the Cadillac.

Mercedes can try and follow Cadillac but they will fall flat on their faces. Wonder why they are calling it the CLC? hmmmm. maybe becasue they know the CTS is far superior to any pile of **** they have ever produced? It’s probably a desperate move to save their asses from the brink of destruction. Maybe they could beg Bob Lutz to buy them out so that they don;t have to lay off all their workers when they fold?

GMrules… get your ignorant ass back to earth….Cadillac cant even think of their own models…the BLS? wow…a shorter versioned of the DTS…GM can’t even keep things that work…by getting rid of the H1 they have destroyed Hummer…they got rid of the flip lights on the vette….and buick…wat a joke, they dont have anything going for them…I don’t have a problem with Chevrolet or Cadillac or GM as a whole for the most part…but I think they would agree, they aren’t better than Mercedes in the luxury market outside of the Escalade…MB is just different they price things higher so that can keep the brand of high quality …

SL>XLR

What I meant was take all the current models up a segment so it would be like-

Kill anything below the C-Class

C-class against 5 Series
E-class against Bentley Flying Spur
S-class against Bentley Arnage
Maybach against Rolls Royce

Stuart…the idea is to make profit….

BMW’s most profitable car is the 3-Series….Audi doesn’t make that much money off the A8, Volkswagen didn’t make money on the Phaeton…the S-Class is right where it should be, it out sells the 7-Series and the S8…it ranges…i agree the C-Class is crap now…but companies like Bentley, RR, Lamborghini and Ferrari don’t make a whole lot of money…thats why they are all owned by Major companies…The AMG models will somewhat compete with the top-tier cars you mention…but MB jst wouldnt make money…theres a reason why Aston Martin finaly turned a profit a year ago…o, ya they made $7.36 which for them…was good…top tier companies just don’t make money

Congratulations, Stuart! You fell for it, too. I did NOT post that nasty comment about you, but I have no way to prove it other than the precedent set by my previous posts. If you look far enough back, you’ll see that I do not tell others to f-off and I usually don’t post anything on Mercedes-related articles since Mercedes doesn’t interest me all that much. Since someone has been posting all sorts of ridiculous comments using my id today, I’m sure I’ll be the recipient of many nasty posts like the one you left for me in response. Next time, though, you might want to look a little more closely before you fly off the handle.

thegoldenmackid- I don’t think you understand what I a, saying. All you would be to today range is killing all models from C-class and below and then changing the names of the E-class to C-class and S-class to E-class. Then you make a all new handbuilt car to use the S-class name like the arnage.

To fill the C-class market your can fill it with many of the other brands cars e.g. rear wheel drive chrysler.

Someone from Mercedes-Benz please write and tell Stuart why he is so wrong.
Selling an S-Class at E-class prices makes no business sense whatsover, and if the new E-Class is sold at S-Class prices then volume would decrease.
The A and B and C-Class sell in large numbers in Europe. How will M-B replace all that lost income.
Please explain how your business model will benefit Mercedes-Benz?

How DaimlerChrysler should be performing in the future-

Think of it like Mercedes going against Bentley but with higher sales because of the E-class and S-class

Chrysler going up against (Altough may sound funny now but over a periods of 10 years can hapen e.g. Audi, Lexus) Audi with better more driver friendly and a lot better quality cars.

Dodge aginst Skoda. Standard cars built to run and look good.

Maybe buy another brand to go up against Mazda’s and Volswagen’s as the premium small brands. (e.g. Honda or even Volkwagen or Mazda themselves)

The end

p.s. GMrules – GM always has and always will be ****.
