The White House has a planned tour of the nation this week in order to help promote electric vehicles by visiting power plants and battery production facilities.

Obama will visit the groundbreaking of Compact Power Inc.’s new lithium ion cell factory located in Holland, Michigan, which according to an Associated Press report, is expected to add 450 green jobs by 2013. The plant is expected to $303 million to build, and received $151 million in federal stimulus to fund its construction.

The visit to the Holland facility will be just one of several stops this week aimed at promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, as well as promoting the creation of new high-tech and so-called “green” jobs, according to a White House official. The stops are also aimed at helping to makes Obama’s vow to have one million plug-in vehicles on the road by 2015 a reality.

Included on the list of events is a joint event by housing and urban development secretary Shaun Donovan, along with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as they host an event Wednesday night to promote electric vehicle charging stations.

The federal government estimates that stimulus funds could help to spur the creation of as many as 500,000 advanced batteries per year as of late 2014, thanks to the $2.4 billion in federal stimulus grants given to promote next-generation electric vehicles.

The $2.4 billion in stimulus is estimated, according to the Department of Justice, to bring down battery costs capable of a 100-mile range from $33,000 to $16,000 by 2013, eventually reaching a cost of $10,000 in 2015.
