Who dies when teen drivers crash?

01/18/2006, 11:42 AM

The majority of people killed in crashes involving teen drivers are people other than the teens themselves, according to just-released findings from 10 years of crash data analyzed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AFTS). The new analysis shows that young novice drivers comprise slightly more than one-third of all the fatalities in crashes in which they are involved; whereas nearly two-thirds of those killed are other vehicle users and pedestrians. The analysis shows that between 1995 and 2004, crashes involving 15-, 16-, and 17-year-old drivers claimed the lives of 30,917 people nationwide, of which 11,177 were the teen drivers themselves. The remaining 19,740 included 9,847 passengers of the teen drivers, 7,477 were occupants in vehicles operated by drivers who were at least 18 or older, 2,323 were non-motorists. The US needs a more comprehensive licensing schooling and exam. It’s evident when you see people backing up the highway, or stopping in the middle of it to get over that they have no idea how dangerous and stupid they truely are. The problem is not just with teenagers, but obviously that’s where it starts, and that’s where it has to start to be fixed.

People in other countries see driving as a privilage, whereas americans see it as a right. I remember seeing an article a few years ago that said it cost $4000-5000 to get the required schooling in Japan. If we had a system like that, perhaps people would respect the idea that driving is not simply a right of passage, and learn how to handle their cars, instead of the sorry excuse for drivers ed that there is now.

Mike – while I agree that Japan has a more comprehensive (as with other countries) have you ever driven there? My international driving experience has been one of be-thankful-for-what-you-have! I suppose the moral is that everywhere there is driving there are stupid people, or to be less negative, there are people who have never been trained properly and are unaware of the real risk they are causing.

Part of the problem came about when public schools got out of the drivers ed business and private schools took over. When I went to school almost everyone took driver’s ed, now hardly any schools have it. So the cost moved from the public arena but it has come back in the form of deaths, injuries, etc.

Being a teenager, i thought it might be nice to post what i think. I don’t have my permit or license yet, but i AM in drivers ed (my school has it). And i personally, am scared to death of driving. All these figures about how bad teen drivers are. In drivers ed, they teach u parts of the car and what u are supposed to do. But it’s all basic and half of the time we’re learning things that don’t help us when driving. I think drivers ed needs to be revamped completely. I do agree tho that licensing programs need to step it up a few notches. Passing a test or two shows nothing. What if it’s a fluke? I personally, can wait a bit more to get my permit and license. I’d rather be safe and be able to actually DRIVE first.

Do whatever they are doing in Germany. They have the highest speed limits and the lowest fatality rates. Must be doing something right.

The first step would be to eliminate the “You Win” private driving schools that are in it, quite frankly, for nothing but the money.
