RangeRoverBoy, I’m going to have to disagree with you. We’re not talking about the meaning behind GTO, it’s the actual car you have to refer it to. You can’t say that the older GTO isn’t a GTO while the new one is. That’s like saying the new Mustang is more of a Mustang than the original… I’m a huge Mustang fan but the original is the original. If you want to use a name you should stick with components of what made the old car a GTO whether or not they misnamed it originally in your opinion.

Using basic components and platforms is fine in my opinion, that’s how companies are efficient. But taking a car and slapping a new badge on it is wrong. I personally think that this car should be a Pontiac, NOT a Camaro. It’s better looking than the Camaro, more true to the original while still looking completely new. They should come up with a different body for both the GTO and Camaro.

You guys seem to be missing the point with the whole Zeta platform dealie.

But first of all – completely disregard that picture of the Firebird. GM aren’t stupid enough to just rebadge cars anymore. Look at the Sky/Solstice twins – there technically the same car, but they look totally different. That’ll be the same situation with the Camaro/GTO twins. Underneath, they’ll both have the Zeta platform, with the LS2 and a six-speed manual, but the exterior and interior will be as different as day and night.

I’ve always said if they widen the grille on the Camaro Concept then it would look much better. Now this looks good. Firebird, Trans Am or Camaro. It doesn’t matter to me. If the car looks good, I’d buy it.

GTO was stolen from European racing classifications.

(a line borrowed from GTO Heaven website)
Gran Turismo Omologato means Grand Touring class production vehicle, homologated for racing.

Basically a large, high-performance sports car comfortable enough for long trips or ‘touring’, as opposed to the smaller, less comfortable 2-seater ‘true’ sports cars.

So the new Pontiac GTO is much closer to a true ‘GTO’ than the old GTO muscle car.

Ferrari GTO is the only one I want.

Thanks, you got my point, the Impala is another perfect example, that car should have been called the Caprice, if it was going to carry on a name. The 94-96 Impala, that’s an example of what it should have/ could have been.

Look, I luv the Camaro and I think that a new Firebird and GTO would be great too and this is why I don’t to see it flop by hearing on TV and in the mags that these cars suck cause they are nuthing like what people expect from a Cam/Fire or GTO.

I believe that these are great cars but I think your shooting yourself in the foot by naming it something it’s not. The present day GTO is a new modern muscle car to fight with the luxury sport market that seems to be prevalent. Not the classic GTO we know.

Rog is right. The Holden GTO was a mistake and rebadging the new Camaro as one would be. If they do more than one version (who wants to take bets? -’cuz they WILL) it should be a Firebird/Trans Am. Putting a NAME on a vehicle does not always render a success. Remember the Mustang II? Someone should have been shot over that mess! What about the various Impalas? (Nothing WRONG with them, but they don’t ven remotely mirror the original-outdated, or not!)

The MFG’s need to stick with what made those cars popular/successful. The original GTO was a stripped Temepest with a big motor. It was fast AND affordable. So, make it so.

Well, the Firebird was always more or less a Camaro with different end caps. It was usually engines that set them apart in the early days. This looks pretty good, although why the ’77-78 look is more classic than other years is beyond me, although it was popular because of the Bandit movies. I think the ’67-69 and ’70-73 are the best-looking.

Both Firebird and Camaro have rabid fans, and I don’t think many would cross over from one to the other. But I also don’t think by this time there are enough to justify building both.

I don’t get the reference to BMW either. BMW and Pontiac have both used a signature split grille for more than 50 years, sometimes tall, sometimes narrow, sometimes wide, sometimes flanked by other elements. It’s inevitable that in certain cases there will be a degree of similarity, but I don’t think many people would mistake one for the other.

Rog, I hope you are confused on the definition of a platform. GM does not need anymore car RWD platforms. They have the Sigma (CTS/STS), Y (vette/XLR) and now the Zeta(lower cost). Just because the Camaro and GTO and Buick Sedan are on the same platform does not mean they share any visible components. Suspensions/drivetrains(multiple possible) and some of the base black metal (inner wheelhouse, front of dash, etc.)would be shared. They would have different wheelbases/widths/glass/doors/fenders/everything else and no one would know they are on the same platform but somebody who looked under the hood or at the suspension. In fact it could have different rear suspensions to accomodate RWD and AWD.

I guess there cold be room for more RWD if they decide there was a market for a much smaller vehicle like a Swatch car or mini size.
