Last week, we told you about a report in the latest issue of Britain’s Autocar magazine indicating Porsche was working on a new supercar to compete with the Bugatti Veyron. With 950 hp and a top speed of 254 mph, the Porsche “GT1″ would be positioned squarely against the $1.3 million Veyron. Speed TV has since republished the whole article online, plus Autocar’s artist’s rendering of the car.

God I hope not. That thing is aweful and not a street car like the Veyron is. This thing belongs on the race track.

I was in Chicago last week. Want to know what I saw in person?
A Bugatti Veryon
Two Porsche Carerra GT (Silver and Yellow)
A Saleen S7 Twin Turbo
The most beautiful of the three? The Saleen S7 Twin Turbo (IMO)
The best build quality? Tie between the Saleen and the Porsche
The nicest interior? Tie between the Saleen and the Veryon
Which car would I drive? The Saleen S7 Twin Turbo any day of the week.
IMO the Veryon is hideous (for 1.3 million). Looks like a Lotus Elise and a VW Golf got togehter and…. you know.
The Carerra GT is a very elegant car. I think Porsch should just go about refining it. Give it a 7 speed dual clutch gear box, improve the aero as much as you have to, and beef up the engine to veryon spec. I’d like to see a V6 with triple sequential turbos ala MB SLK 320 CDI.
Better yet make this super car with a diesel engine. Seriously. Give it the same engine that the Audi R10 has. Now THAT would be sweet.

The Picture is only an Artist Rendering meaning they had somebody draw a car that they think could be built, and john you can’t just transplant a race motor into a street car it wouldn’t meet any regulations for road use. also I don’t want to know what you saw in person.

John: I respect your opinion although I can’t agree with them. The Veyron and Carerra GTs are, IMHO, far above what the Saleen could ever be. Yes, you can compare the similar performance numbers but the Saleen lacks the design and historical pedigrees from true car manufacturers such as Bugatti (owned by VW) and Porsche. Saleen is still a tuner (albeit a highly specialized one) that happens to manufacture one car and adds bolt-ons parts to existing Ford vehicles. The Veyron and GT’s design won’t look dated in 10 years while the S7 is a boring design and becoming dated already. And yes, I’ve seen and sat in all three.
As for the GT1, it’ll be interesting to see how it will progress now the Porsche has a bigger interest in VW’s ownership.

Having recently spent substantial sums gaining de facto control of Bugatti (and Lamborghini’s)parent company, VW, the Porsche guys now wish to waste more shareholder cash competing with their newest acquisition.

254mph huh? I don’t quite see a point. There are probably 2 tracks in the entire planet that you could take the car to terminal velocity and enjoy a ride locked at 200+…
For 1.3Mil, I’d get an S65, an F430, a Ducati 999R and keep a LOT of change. More toys > one toy that you can’t fully play with.

I was thinking the same thing, why is Porsche competing against a company they have substantial investment in. But while the GT1 may match the Veyron’s performance, I would suspect it will be less expensive, and there’s probably room in the market for buyers who want the speed for less cash and a bit less flash. And like the 959 was, it’s a halo model for mass-market Porsches (as if they actually need one).

I think it’s pretty sweet and for a manufacturer that definetely uses “trickle down” technology from it’s racing mules down into the their street machines it’s exciting. I’m not big on top speed honors as someone else put it very well above with true useability issues but I guess it’s a notch in the bed post thing. The competitive drive on the circuits is more fun to watch than a straight line 0-200 dash. I don’t think you can compare the Veyron with an idea such as this…it’s like comparing a Maserati and a Ferrari….one’s a ‘plush-rush’ the other is ‘race-face’. Different clientelle.

#12 “Terminal velocity?” You can’t even do it with the amount of friction on tires and the reaction force of air resistance on the damn car, have you done physics or pulling words from ur brain? Cos terminal veloictiy is well and truely only achieved by throwing the car out of a plane from a 50,000foot drop!
No that Porsche is for the track. The car needs whole new design carrying porsche herritage.

id rather have the veyron. the veyron had a purpose. it was made from scratch to be the fastest in the world. this artists rendering is like the ferrari enzo ffx and the maserati mc12 corsa. its like a tuned porsche carrera GT. P.S whoever compares a buggati’s interior with any car is insane. just one indicator switch on a bugatti is worth £4000 never mind the entire interior. and i think having a bugatti badge is more prestigious than a porsche badge.

this whole idea of making a veyron fighter is completely idiotic you cant compare a car that has been made for years with a little tweeks and a new engine to a car that has been in the works for probably as many years as this car has been in production. i also have seen the interior of the carrera gt and the veyron there is no comparison at all the veyron has completely unique styling ques and gorgeous peices in the car where the carrera has a few places where it lacks. if porshe or any company thinks that they can make a car that can beat the veyron itll take a new body, new engine, new concept, and a completely diffrent view of the car it cant just be a customized version of a car there already selling for 500+ thousand

Dear all
I actually pulled the story together and wrote it for Autocar. You guys haven’t seen the full text, but let me assure you this drawning is straight off a leaked technical drawing of the real car. Honestly, I had the the drawing in my hand. It does seems to have a Carrera GT centre section and interior, though.
The news on the engine and performance came from a solid engineering source. A Porsche mule with the real drivetrain in the back is already running.
cheers JHH

i think all porsche has to do is design a whole new chasis with some cutting edge technology, and then apply the varriable turbine geometry to a tuned V10 taken from the Carrera GT. Make the whole car anything less than 1,500kilograms and we’ll have a winner

Variable Turbine Geometry – i meant to couple a twin turbo with the technology from the 07′ Porsche Turbo and put that in with the V10 they’ve made already =)

ok if this would be a seriously poor effort of the part of the porsche design staff. This seriously looks like a tuner carrera GT not an all new million dollar plus super exotic. I would hope porsche will provide the bugatti fighter with a more dramatic/emotional shape

Radical SR8 is another car that would literally eat the Saleen S7. It’s road legal, it’s cheaper, it holds the production car record in the ring and it can drive upside down too. Saleen S7 is just a piece of american junk.
